Galaxy S10e Android 11 OneUI 3 - Photos disappearing from gallery after Google Photos Edit?

Hi, apologies if this has been asked before, I tried searching....

After upgrading to Android 11 / OneUI 3 I’ve noticed something strange with photos.  I use Google Photos to manage and edit my photos. If I take a photo and then crop it or edit it with Google Photos, it disappears from the phones native Gallery app? This didn’t happen before? The photos aren’t moved by Google, they are still in the correct camera folder.

This is frustrating, because the photo then doesn’t show up in other apps (i.e. WhatsApp, Instagram etc).  Anyone know what’s going on? It’s as if as soon as Google Photos has edited a photo (or saved a copy) then the native Samsung Gallery ignores/ hides it?

I feel like I must be missing something simple?

So I’ve managed to find some more information on Reddit.

The reason behind it seems to be that when Google Photos edits the file, it removes the EXIF date information.  Then in the Samsung Gallery it shows the photos as taken on 1st January 1970.  So Gallery is not hiding them, but it’s showing them as 1970 so they appear at the very bottom!

Not sure if it’s a change in Google photos, or the Samsung software that’s causing this. I’d suggest maybe Samsung as it only started happening after Android 11 OneUI 3 update.

Only workaround seems to be to edit in Gallery not Google Photos.  I hate it when things like this just stop working!

The same exact thing has been happening to me. I prefer to edit with Google photos b/c inloke the options better than the samsung ones.. but losing date info is making photo organization a nightmare! I'm now looking for an alternative to google.photos, unfortunately.

same here. I've just lost some of my most memorable pics. This hurts too deep.
