Hi everyone,

Just got a samsung s10 after being apple foe ages

One thing i noticed was you can not seem to set texts and calls from priority people to make a sound while on silent

It works in DND mode but not when your set to silent or vibrate

How can i fix this? Is there a setting i am missing or an app that does it?

I have my phone on vibrate or silent a lot but i still don't want to miss messages and calls from certain people

Thank you

I am also very interested in this functionality. Ideal would be for DND to offer two options: silent w/ emergency bypass & vibrate w/ emergency bypass.

It would also be helpful if more than one DND schedule could be set, or if DND could be toggled on/of via Bixby.

I don't understand Samsung's hesitation because HUAWEI has had this option for years. I just upgraded to the Samsung A70 and am most put out that my NEW phone doesn't offer this basic option so I miss overnight calls when I turn off both my wifi and data signals. As well, I've previously complained to Samsung customer service reps that their settings menus have too many steps and they should just create quick shortcuts. Thank goodness I still have my HUAWEI phone.

Here's another scenario where this would be handy. I moved overseas and have maintained my mobile number in my former country to get calls and messages from time to time, using a dual simcard device connected to my S10 via bluetooth and with an app on the S10 to manage this (in case anyone is wondering, I could not get an S10 dual-sim international version since it likely would not have worked with the only US carrier with good reception in my area and which still uses some CDMA technology).

Given the 7 hours' time difference, I don't want to hear the sounds from calls received from my foreign number during the night when asleep. If I use the Do Not Disturb (DND) mode, testing has shown me that the call sound comes through since the phone considers that sound as coming from "Media" since it comes through the dual-sim app on the phone. If I remedy this by turning off "Media" sounds in the DND mode, then I cannot watch a show on Netflix or any videos before falling asleep and hear the sound. I would have to temporarily allow Media sounds in DND mode and then hope I remember to turn the Media sounds options back off before I fall asleep (which I will not, since I fall asleep systematically when watching something before going to sleep).

When I use the Silent mode on the phone, testing has shown that the sound of an incoming call on the dual-sim app is muted. And in Silent mode I am, indeed, able to get sound from Netflix, Youtube, etc. Great, solution found, right? Not quite...the downside is that in silent mode, NO emergency calls can come through from preferred contacts or if a caller tries to reach me three times or more the way this is possible in DND mode. And I need to be able to have emergency calls from family members in need bypassing the DND/silent mode.

There is no setting anywhere that allows me to control which media sounds to mute and which ones to allow in DND or silent mode. No Bixby routine allows me to manage this, either. We are able to customize the notifications we receive on apps on the phone, so it would be nice if we could also customize sounds produced by those apps. Or if that is too big a task, then give us some way to allow some Media sounds from some apps and block Media sounds from other apps in DND mode.

They just told you how to receive text and calls from certain contacts while in DND mode. What else do you want lol. I don't see how being able to do so in silent mode is any different

DND mode doesn't allow any calls or messages to notify the phone in any form, even in silent. Sometimes people still want to be able to see and answer calls from non-emergency contacts if they are busy on their phone, but only have emergency contacts actually ring the phone.

The issue is that if you are on your phone doing things, then you can go on silent mode and still see the notification of a call coming in without the sound (and decide if you want to answer it). If you're not looking at your phone when it's on silent mode, then you won't see that a call has come through, be it from one of your designated emergency contacts or from anyone else.

The advantage of DND mode is that you can make the phone be silent except 1) for calls from your designated emergency contacts, 2) from any contact that tries to call you three times in a row. The disadvantage of DND for some people posting here seems to be that they want at least a vibration alert, not complete silence, during DND mode, for all contacts (not their approved emergency contacts).

And I have highlighted the issue that VoIP calls coming in from apps (such as my dual-sim app), are problematic since they create sounds in DND mode because the phone does not categorize those sounds as call sounds but as media sounds. So DND mode does not work if you want to allow emergency contact call sounds, and do not want sounds coming through from certain media apps (such as calls coming through on my dual-sim mapp) but want media sounds from other apps, such as Netflix. Silent mode is not sufficient since it  blocks all unwanted sounds (I don't get the sound alert from an incoming call on my dual-sim app, but I do get the sound I want to get from Netflix) but this also means that emergency contacts' calls (or calls made by the same number three times) do not produce any sound (to wake you up in an emergency in the middle of the night, for example.

I found a temporary workaround which is not ideal, but which helps. Here is what I am doing, in case it can help others. Since my dual-sim card device is communicating with my S10 via Bluetooth, I ran a Bixby routine that tells my phone to deactivate bluetooth at a set time at night during bedtime and that it reactivates it at a set time in the morning when I wake up. That way, I go into DND mode at night and calls from my emergency contacts can get through/make a sound, but my dual-sim app is not going to be connected and making sounds to wake me up if I receive a call on my overseas number while asleep. This works for me because I do not use a bluetooth speaker connected to my phone to play music or anything else during those bedtime/sleep hours, so I am happy to have bluetooth turn off automatically at night and have it automatically come on when I wake up and re-connect with my dual-sim card device to let any calls through again.

Hey, has there been any progress on this? I don't think I've seen any moderators responding to it since Oct 2019 & I'm anxious to see this added to an update...ASAP! I used to be very tech savvy years back, but 6'ish yrs ago any knowledge/know-how was wiped away by multiple medical conditions & I haven't been able to regain the info or the confidence to try again...BUT, you can't seem to do much these days without your smartphone, so I'm reluctantly trying again. I'm sure my issue is quite basic, but seems in line with this. I turn off all notification sounds from most everything because I get sick of being woken up by the hundreds (maybe not REALLY hundreds, but feels like it) of junk emails/texts that come in day & night! HOWEVER, I've been missing ALLOT of messages/texts from hubby, who's quite frustrated at this point because I never get back to him in a reasonable time. I also have ALL of  my family on the other side of the U.S., so the 3hr difference can make it tough for calls/messaging as well! My parents now have life threatening health issues as well, so it's imperative that I get their calls/ msgs right away, whether I'm resting, in a doc appt, etc! I swear I've had the ability to shut off all notifications completely, while adding exceptions which will override any other condition set, no matter what...I just can't remember what device I had or if it was a special app that I used or what! But either way, I can say without a doubt, I've always had Samsung phones, so maybe it was an app - idk! But honestly, I can't see this being an impossible request. Is there something I can do for my situation, something I'm missing, or is this in fact in line with your issue? ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED GUYS!🥰

@lovingred 2, if you want to get sound notifications of a phone call or text from someone (husband, parents) but not from others, and don't want any other sounds, then assuming you are saying you are on a Samsung Galaxy S10, go to your Contacts, select each individual contact you want to hear from, and tap on the star to mark them as a favorite contact. Then go and adjust your notifications for Do Not Disturb. You can access that page by either going to your "Settings" page and then to "Notifications" or by turning on the Do Not Disturb icon at the top of your phone menu, and then click on it to access that page.

Once there click on the "Allow exceptions" option and select "Calls from" and then "Favorite contacts only" and then go to the "Messages from" option and choose "Favorite contacts only". That way any calls or messages from anyone you have starred as a Favorite Contact in your contact list will not have the sound  of their call or text message blocked when you have put your phone on Do Not Disturb mode.

This feature would be great!

I use dnd with favorite contacts to come through and works great for me.. But! It works for me because I am constantly checking my phone and in general dislike my phone constantly vibrating due to notifications.

Alternatively, this feature would be really useful. Here is another use case for the Samsung team: I am pregnant with my first child and want to be able to get through to my husband if I go into labor early. He has his phone on vibrate all the time because he is not glued to his phone and needs to be notified when work calls, texts, emails come through. We can't use the dnd + favorite contacts combo because he can't keep the vibrate setting in addition to favorite contacts coming through with sound since dnd does not allow that combination.

I can't get DND to work on my S10 phone. It is not set to silent but DND is active. I have my home phone as a favorite, and if I call my S10 with it, the call shows up but it does not audibly ring. Is this how the DND "feature" is supposed to work?  I need to be able to exclude spam calls at night but need to hear a ring if i get an emergency call. What gives?

Update - Now I think it works; my home phone was listed twice - one was listed as a favorite and the other was not; same numbers but different names. For some reason the unstarred was the name that registered as the caller. Having made that one a favorite, it seems to work now.
