An SD card was removed unsafely. To prevent your phone from restarting... notification

Ever since the big update to Android 11 / One UI 3 I've been getting the

"An SD card was removed unsafely. To prevent your phone from restarting unexpectedly, save unsaved data and restart your phone"

notification, many times a day.

After the update and prior to having this error, I have not messed with the card or the SIM, connected the phone to the PC, dropped the phone or done anything that might lead to this - the card had been inserted months ago in the phone and left untouched.

I don't seem to have any issues using the phone, can access the card OK for both reading & writing.

I can't turn the bloody notification off and it's driving me up the wall as I'm getting it even during the night.

Have tried:

  • restarting the phone
  • unmounting the card and restarting the phone
  • physically removing and card from the phone and putting it back
  • removing the card and error checking it (in windows, using a card reader)
  • copying the card contents to the PC, formatting the card in the phone, then copying the contents back (via the windows file explorer)
  • getting into the recovery mode (which was pain the *ss) and wiping the dalvik cache
  • full/factory reset

The model # is SM-G970F/DS, kernel version is 4.14.113-20607146, latest available updates are installed, phone is stock, non rooted, non carrier locked.

Any suggestions?

Yeah, I also had a break in getting the notification after the latest update - I was even hoping that the latest update might have fixed it, but no luck.

Glad to hear it was fixed for you.

I also have a Class 10, UHS-I,  V30 Kingston card, have been using it before the issue started, so it should be everything but slow.

Being that this message is three weeks old, hopefully, you have already resolved your problem.

But It might help someone else....

After the latest and greatest Samsung Android 11 update, I experienced the same SD card error message with my Galaxy A71 5G UW for several weeks as well.

So far, so good after clearing the system cache. No removal, re-seating or reformatting required. It's been less than a day but have not seen that annoying message since clearing the cache. Before the reset I was getting the message more and more frequently.

I had intentionally postponed the updates and would have been fine without it.

Here is a helpful how-to video.

I hate those updates that I don't ask for.

Good luck..

Hi,

For me it the issue wasn't resolved.

I'll take a look a look at your link - however, when doing a factory reset, shouldn't the system cache be cleared as well?  (since I did perform a factory reset and still have the issue)

Hi PJM9805, I still have the issue. I'll try that and get back to you all.

I've tried to get my s10e in to the recovery menu. Can't seem to be able to do it. Supposed to be a combination of power, volume up and Bixby key. Doesn't seem to work.

I had a really hard time myself - without changing the technique, at some point I managed to access the recovery menu, and wiped the dalvik cache.  I didn't get rid of the notification though.

Try entering in recovery mode while the phone is connected to a windows 10 pc. For me it worked. I have the same sd error on my brand new a72 btw. I did everything except factory reset. Ive tryed 4 different sd, they all work perfectly on other older devices... Besides doing factory reset and trying to get a sobstitution phone I don't know what else to do...
