An owner can manually download software if they don't wish to edit for it to appear in the software update section in the phone itself.
Take a look on sammobile and xdadevelopers.com and use Google Search that explains what can be done to achieve this and how to be particular careful about doing so.
Personally I prefer to wait. 
Updates are rolled out in batches based on factors such as network, location and purchase date, so they won't reach everyone at once. What I'd suggest is heading to Settings > Software Update > Auto Download Over Wi-Fi, and this way you can grab the update as and when it becomes available to you. I'd also advise against downloading the update from a third party site where possible, to avoid any potential compatibility issues.
