@ShadowB: For clarity, are you referring to the Messages app, or Facebook Messenger, and are you encountering the update error on the Google Play Store? Please can you try unplugging your router at the wall for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and allow time for the reset process to complete, then attempt the update again. If the same error persists, try connecting to an alternate router, a friend or family members, as this will help to determine if the problem lies with your home router.
If the issue is affecting the Messages app, please open the app > Tap the 3 dots in the top right > Settings > More Settings (or Advanced on Android 12) > Text Messages > Show When Delivered > On > Back > Multimedia Messages > Show When Delivered > On > Show When Read > On.
