Since I installed android 11 on my phone I cannot use the contacts app or make calls they both just close down instantly. Any ideas how to fix this?

One of the usual go-to fixes should work in this case.

1) clearing individual app cache
2) restarting phone
3) wiping cache partition from recovery boot

Try them individually in that order

Try clearing your cache partition.

Have you tried clearing the data of your contacts app. Not just the cache

won't I lose all my contacts though? I've seen this option and was told to back up contacts first, trouble is when trying to back up contacts the app I use; which was recommended, says there are no contacts to back up?

It depends where you stored your contacts. They could be stored on your phone, on your sim, on your Google account, samsung account, or a mixture of them.

But you CAN back them up using other methods;
If you can access your contacts app you should move them onto one of your accounts, Google or Samsung. This is done through the contacts app itself.

If you can't access the app.
Try going into settings>accounts and backup>back and restore> then choose the "backup data" for your samsung account and make sure contacts are selected. And as an additional precaution, at the bottom of the backup and restore page, it also let's you backup to your sd card, its called "external storage transfer".

Alternatively, if you'd like to try this first, i can send you the apk of the contacts app, it will most likely be the same version that you have now, and will be applied like an update to your original app, and may fix the problem without removing any data or requiring any backups.
If you'd like to try that, let me know and i will send you a temporary link to download the apk.

Thank you so much for all your help. The issue has been fixed. Turns out it was a hidden contact storage app causing the problem.

I cleared cache and data and restarted my phone and it was fixed.

I really appreciate all your help. You've been amazing!
