Go into Settings, Apps, Choose the app i.e messages and then choose notifications then new messages and check the sounds there @Kiwiinexile

No, that's not it. I have had a chat session with Samsung, which concluded with advice to restart in safe mode. That worked. Until this morning, when, after being switched off all night, the phone again refuses to play sound.
