No email notifications on standby?

Using spark for my gmail account. 

If my phones been on standby for 15 mins or more I wont get email notifications,  why ?

I suppose that spark is an e-mail application (that's unclair to me). 

If yes: The application is probably optimized for battery usage, simply exempt the app and it should be fine.

Tried this and no luck. Apparently its something to do with the doze feature where only high priority notifications come through. 

It was worse on gmail and outlook, at least with spark I get email notifications when I unlock the phone and when it's been locked less than 10 mins
