Galaxy A8 2018 MUST Get Android 10 - Petition

Samsung's update policy, which means every phone gets 2 major updates MUST change. The Galaxy A8 2018 launched in January 2018 with nougat, before the s9 and Oreo while the j7 duo launched 2 months later with Oreo . This means the j7 duo, sold at exactly the same time as the A8, probably for half the price, will get android 10 while the A8 will not. Also, most A8 owners bought it after Oreo rolled out, 2-3 months later so not updating the phone to the newest version on android and making it a year's update before a worse phone should not be acceptable. And this may happen just because it was launched with a 1.5 year old os and had it for about 2 months. The Samsung update policy of 2 years is a lie for the A8 and a 2017 devices - it is more like only 1⅓ years of updates. Also there is nothing that the A6 2018 and all of the 2018 j series do better than the a8, despite all being sold at the same time and they will get android 10. Last year there was a similar petition for A 2017 devices to get pie, but Samsung didnt update them. Hopefully they do read this and learn that they won't make more sales of newer devices if they don't update older ones - it would just further damage their reputation. We must convince them to do this not just for the A8, but other devices like the S8 and note8 and for future updates as well. Android 10 will not roll out to Samsung devices for months, but if this is started now we can let them know early on so they have no excuses of not having enough time to make a new update, etc

@BaxteruK: Android 8 was not even in the optimisation stage for the A8 when this device was released as it was provided publically around Summer 2018???

S9 was released in February one month after A8 with Oreo out of the box. S8 was released March 2017, so you cannot throw it in the same basket.

I understand part of your argument that these are terms and conditions. All that we are saying is that this rule is stupid especialy in the case at hand. Since majority of purchasers that bought A8 updated it to oreo right out of the box.

I don't think that's fair to write like this. The rule isn't stupid, and it's no rule, its terms and conditions.

The S9 was first released in March 2018 with Android 8. It got Android 9 in January 2019. It's probably going to get Android 10 in January 2020.

The A8 was first released in December 2017 with Android 7. It got Android 8 in September 2018. It got Android 9 in March 2019.

So both got 3 major versions. The time span for the A8 between first release and the final major version was quite short, but so what ? Those who bought the A8 could have known that.

I wouldn't object if Samsung voluntarily gave us more major version and longer security updates. But if Samsung doesn't do that then that's no scandal, it's just business as usual.

@RolfVonHessen: The A8 was first released in December 2017 with Android 7. It got Android 8 in September 2018. It got Android 9 in March 2019.

I don't like to sound lika a spoild brat but here are my arguments

It was announced in december issued in January 2018 and S9 was released in March 2018 with Oreo on board. Check the data please. As you said upgraded in september and than march 2019. They shoved both major updates in practiccaly a year. Android Oreo was released by google in august 2017.

Now they are releasing the A51 (announced december 2019) and it will have Android 10 which was officialy released by google on September 3rd. So an A series phone will be released with Android 10 before the S11 will launch.

I understand that when buying we accepted the TaC. Yes it was stated that A8 releases with nougat. I am just saying that i find the policy in case of A8 a bit unfair and/or unreasonable.

Also: now a days it is imposible to get an A series phone of the same buid quality with an IP rating like A8. So a substitute would be an old Flagship. So again questionable updates... Like you said buisiness as usal

Why was a January 2018 phone issued with an August 2016 operating system, when a new operating system had been publicly released August 2017?  We paid for 2 major updates.  We only got 1.  The world got Oreo August 2017,  long before our phone, so that can't count.   We got Pie.  Now where's our 2nd update?

Samsung, we have loved you.  Don't turn us against you.

Just the Facts:

--- Android 7 (Nougat) was released to the public in August 2016.

--- Android 8 (Oreo) was first released as a developer preview in March 2017 and released to the public on August 21, 2017.

--- The Samsung A8 was announced in December 2017 but issued in January 2018.

Edit: I want to add a quote from user @gadris1978:

"I think it would be nicer for the planet if our devices could last at least 4-5 years, not 2 or 3 maximum, don't you think? Especially in this case, when an updated software could be more than enough."

Samsung, are you an Earth friend or foe?

Well then don't. I'm not saying I wouldn't prefer more updates, I'm saying that's no moral issue and there's no need to fuss or complain. As far as I know there no silver bullet on the market that will solve all your problems with a better overall cost/performance-ratio.

That makes me even more frustrated. If you go to gsm arena and put in search terms:

-Oled screen 5,5"+

-IP68

- Size limit 155mm height and 72mm (i hate huge phones)

In the returned results only A8 is a non flagship.

This is actualy where the problem is. The phone is exceptional value especialy in the build quality department, and because we like it so much, we want it to last, because there are no newer alternatives on the market in this price range.

Yes, that would be nicer. And how much more would you be willing to pay Samsung if they gave the A8 two more major version ?

Hi Rolf,

Do you know how much it would cost Samsung if they updated the A8 to Android 10?
