LU28E590DS/ZA Can't turn mute off

I can't figure out how to turn mute off on my LU28E590DS/ZA monitor with the little joystick doohickey in the back. Do I need to download a driver to make the sound work? I plugged earphones into the jack. But it stays stuck in mute. I see there are plenty of sound system settings so I think this monitor has sound. 

How do I turn the mute off?

@annaparkerv2: When you turn on the monitor, a Direct Key Guide should be visible on screen (Eye Saver Mode, Volume and Features). If you press right then this should raise the volume, and exit Mute. Please be aware that this monitor does not have any built in speakers, so you will need to utilise headphones or connect to an external sound source (such as a PC with speakers).
