Smart stay will keep the screen on while you're looking at itSmart stay will keep the screen on while you're looking at itPlease Note: Availability of this hack may be affected by your device model or OS

Your device's display is perfectly designed to make your movies, games and documents look amazing, but can also be one of the biggest drains on your battery. Your timeout settings will send it to sleep after periods of inactivity, but this can be a real pain if you have to tap the screen every 30 seconds while you're sinking into a long read. Activate Smart stay and reduce the timeout period to get the perfect sweet spot.

Samsung_Hacks_Smart_Stay.gifWhile far from new, Smart stay is a sharp little feature that many people still don't know about. It uses your front-facing camera to register your eye movements, so if you're using (though not touching) the screen, the display will stay active. As soon as you look away, your device's timeout settings will take over, so that hilarious GIF you love can play on loop for as long as you're watching it, but will stop itself when you're not.

Here's how to set it up:

  1. With the device unlocked, swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal the Quick Settings panel.
  2. Tap the Settings icon. It's the cog-like symbol on the right-hand side near the date and time.
  3. Now find Advanced features and then Motions and gestures.
  4. Scroll down to Smart stay and slide the toggle to activate.
  5. Now go back to Settings and find Display and then Screen timeout.
  6. Set the timeout period to 15 seconds.

Top tip: If you need your screen to stay active for longer – for instance while following a recipe or reading an eBook – just raise your screen timeout settings to 5 or 10 minutes.
