I have an old Sony VHS cassette recorder (Model SLV-SE710) with scart connection which I connected to my new Samsung TV (Model QE50Q65TAUXXU) via a scart to HDMI converter, yet the TV is displaying "no signal". Just wondering whether the VHS player is too obsolete.

@Narada You could follow @luke364 's advice and further information on options here : https://www.reviewgeek.com/18695/how-to-watch-vhs-tapes-on-your-hd-or-4k-tv/
I take it you want your VHS for watching some old tapes rather than recording, however if there are some shows you would like to keep does digitising not appeal https://www.video-2-pc.co.uk/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4beKm6jf7gIVh6ztCh29qwNIEAAYAiAAEgJ29vD_BwE or there are companies who offer the service (depends if would be worthwhile though and not too expensive) https://www.video2dvdtransfers.co.uk/? gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqt6uwKjf7gIVQuDtCh1vTg99EAAYAiAAEgKpn_D_B...

I had a VHS/DVD combi some time ago and copied some stuff over. VHS is pretty old technology nowadays and does not provide the bestr. quality.
