On the remote there is but one choice for surround. But there are many different levels of surround: 5.1, 7.1, 9.1.4.... is there any way to know which one has been enabled and is there anyway I can choose what degree of surround is coming out of the speakers?

When selecting Sound Mode on the remote, anything other than Standard will be in 9.1.4, regardless of the input audio. In Standard Mode, it will adjust to the input audio track, be it 2.1, 5.1 etc. You can find this information on pages 6-9 of your user manual here

Interesting. I've been something of a surround nut going back to Quadraphonic days of the 1970's.... What that 9.1.4 can pick out and spread about is astounding... thanks for info... one last Q: seems looking at adaptive or surround that adaptive might be a better choice at Times... is that just me?
