On pairing my phone with ANY Bluetooth speaker, it will connect ok but the sound does not come from the speaker, just the phone

Because it is paired, doesn't mean it is connected. You need to ensure you tap "connect". When connected you usually hear a tone from a blutooth speaker and a short visual message saying connected for audio
