Yesterday (9 May 2025) I installed some big system updates on my new mobile phone, Samsung Galaxy A33. The system is now Android 14, A336BXXSDEYD2, One UI 6.1.
I have been using the *US international* layout with a bluetooth keyboard on Android mobile phones since 2019.
It is a very good layout, in its variants where the key ' and the key " (that is the same with shift) are NOT dead keys. Other solutions are used for acutes and umlauts, mostly with the key AltGr.
Whenever I type
that's, l'amico, "echo"
I do NOT want to get
thatś, lámico, ëcho"
«thatś», «lámico» and «ëcho"» are very annoying. They are mistakes. I type it correctly, but the device gets it wrong.
I do know that I get the normal «'» and «"» if I type it TWICE, but that's not [... thatś?!] a good convention. The ALTGR alternative is much better. For example:
AltGr + a --> á
The AltGr combinations still work, but the problem is that the key ' and the key " have now become dead keys! Now, if I type «'a» I get «á» instead.
Before yesterday's system update, all worked as usual, even on my new device (Samsung Galaxy A33, now with Android 14, A336BXXSDEYD2).
(It still works alright on the device I bought in 2019, Samsung Galaxy J6 -- with Android 10, that was the most recent available update for that model.)
A further detail: the problem (and the change) regards all three modes, Windows/Android/Mac (I can toggle between them with the special key "OS", on the keyboard itself -- all three modes work with my devices, that are Android devices).
I can select only one kind of US international keyboard, with no further settings (it's called "Inglese (US), stile internazionale", in the Italian interface of my device).
My question is: HOW CAN I DISABLE THE DEAD KEY FUNCTION FOR THE KEY «'» AND THE KEY «"»? (Without disabling the US international keyboard, of course.)
AN IDEAL SOLUTION would probably be the choice between two variants:
1. US international keyboard, fewer dead keys
vs
2. US international keyboard, more dead keys
or (other possible names)
1. US international keyboard, quotes as normal keys
vs
2. US international keyboard, quotes as dead keys
Thank you.

Grazie... I'd like to solve this problem, either in Italian or in English. 🙂

Ciao @Members_PpLHBCX,
Facci sapere, ciao!
