Gear Fit 2 - My phone wants to wipe my gear

I had to wipe my Galaxy S6 a few weeks ago and only recently tried to connect my Gear Fit 2 to the phone again. Now when I try to connect I get the message "To connect a new device, the Gear will be reset to its factory setting". I'm sitting here thinking, seriously Samsung? I have to wipe all the data off my gear to be able to connect it to my phone again and sync data? That can't be right. Does anyone have any advice on ways to avoid this and get my Gear Fit 2 synced to my phone??
