So, of the nigh on 400 TVs supported in BBC iplayer for the Blue Planet II  HLG episodes none are from Samsung. Oh joy.

...

Moderator edit: Original thread title was "Blue Planet 2 HLG - No Samsung". With the OP's permission, the title was changed on 12/03/2018 to accurately reflect the dominant theme of the thread as it has progressed. If the reader would like to know more about the HLG format, please check out the BBC's page and FAQ's on it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/projects/high-dynamic-range Thank you, AntS.

The 1230 update does not include the HLG update so we wait six months then might get two updates in a week

Sky Italy have carried out the initial test on the HLG software update and passed it.

It is now onto the next stage so hopefully wont be long

@Jay108: I can confirm what @JAMES4578 said. Beyond a very generic overview, we're currently unable to publish release notes - but I'm seeing what we can do to change that for the future as I think more info on firmware changes would be a good thing for everyone.

Er, not just you, everyone does. But this has been a problem for years and years and years ("currently unable" LOL).

Samsung have a very firm policy NOT to provide release notes, and I would be astonished if you could change this - people far higher up have been screaming at management about it for a very long time.

Based on past experience, what always happens is there is a truimphant announcement of "yes, here are the release notes" but what is supplied is worse than nothing, since it is generic boilerplate and is NOT ever specific to THAT particular firmware:

Improved usability
Improved browser performance
Improved app performance
Improved stability
Improved usability of input devices.

that kind of answer is 100% misleading to most people who will then go away thinking that they've been given release notes when they have not. Seen time and time again from CS operatives.

I've posted it just now. It's a complete waste of time and isn't an overview of this firmware. It's an overview of the sort of things that sometimes can be changed in any firmware for any product.

The BBC claims it has solved the streaming lag which affects internet broadcasts, such as their their Iplayer UHD services for the World Cup and Wimbledon.  However it will be some time before the technology is widely available.

Thanks for the links. I had to laugh at some unfortunate phrases:

"This demonstration showcases HLG content recorded “as live” over the summer, and streamed live over an IP multicast network, dramatically reducing network loading and IP distribution costs. IP multicast services are converted on the stand to conventional unicast DVB-DASH so that they can be decoded by a conventional DASH player and displayed on an off-the-shelf HDR television set."

"Conventional", and "off-the-shelf". Since these are 2014 standards.

Just as long as it's not a Samsung, of course.

Ooh, new firmware! Has it disabled any apps yet? Lol.

I guess the ***** release notes is an industry wide thing, anyone asked Sony about their release notes for the PS4 updates? 'Increased Stability' is all you get!

Oh, that BBC thing sounds like it'll need new technology or protocol to work, so don't get your hopes up.

Changes are needed on infra side as how content is delivered

Here's  closing comment

It suggested the technology may be available by the time of the next World Cup in 2022, and could be delivered to existing equipment with a software update.

So everyone can provide update except Samsung :face-with-tears-of-joy:

None of this "improved stability" excrement that Samsung puts out which is MEANINGLESS.

I'm not guessing, and I'm being deadly serious. The update logs for Sony's most successful product at the moment, is simply 'increased Stability'. Have a look at the change log for the v6.0.0 firmware which came out this week.

Different industries is irrelevant. The PS4 has more than likely sold a lot more than the KS range of TV's!!

At least we know this much. There’s 417 pages here made up off people that aren’t happy with Samsung . I think 80 percent of us will not be buying a Samsung in future. Hopefully more people will see the truth and Samsung will have to evolve or be extinct. Wishful thinking haha
