So, of the nigh on 400 TVs supported in BBC iplayer for the Blue Planet II  HLG episodes none are from Samsung. Oh joy.

...

Moderator edit: Original thread title was "Blue Planet 2 HLG - No Samsung". With the OP's permission, the title was changed on 12/03/2018 to accurately reflect the dominant theme of the thread as it has progressed. If the reader would like to know more about the HLG format, please check out the BBC's page and FAQ's on it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/projects/high-dynamic-range Thank you, AntS.

EDIT: It's a UH625V - looks like a 49"'er - but I was being kind calling it mid-range. Seems it's in the bottom of their HDR supporting range.

Even lower then: max brightness =390 nits. :smiling-face:

That explains it.

You can view it yourself it does make some mention of  sky.

How the TV's displayed it is up to the capabilities of the individual sets.  The fact is that they would at least display the UHD stream rather than SD is a step up from what older Samsung owners are face with.

e.g. J series can display Pseudo HDR by maxing the back light.  Seeing as Samsung can't be bothered to enable it we get neither this or UHD.

No mate you misunderstand. The list was devices capable of playing the UHD stream with the HLG metadata. Very few sets other than the ones i mentioned above and perhaps the high end 2015 Panny LCD (cant be arsed checking) could show it with HLG.

Do you remember seeing the Sky Q box on the list?

cheers

If I remember the list was to show which devices would show 4k hlg,  not just 4k.

Learnt to qoute 😛

No mate

Will try to explain another way, the UHD and HLG stream is the same thing. If a device could play the stream it was added to the list, even if the device could only play it in SDR it was still added.  See Sky Q platform as a example on the list

cheers

@Pete1234 ... Blimey mate, that's going to kick off the "Does Roku do HLG" debate all over again. LOL, perhaps before anyone starts saying there's nothing mentioned on that list that the roku doesn't do HLG, please note that it also doesn't specify that the Sky Q doesn't do HLG (YET).

2016 LG OLEDs reached about 700 nits of peak, and the 2017 models could be calibrated to about 900 nits. So these TVs can get very bright, while maintaining perfect blacks. I bet the 2018 models will be able to do over 1000 nits.

So the notion that LG OLEDs lack for peak brightness isn't really true anymore.

Their issue is the tone mapping. They use mastering display peak luminance, which can have some pretty bad results.

No that isn't what it says. The list show TVs which can play the UltraHD stream. "All episodes of Blue Planet II are now available to watch in Ultra HD (UHD) and High Dynamic Range (HDR) on compatible TV devices.

Devices that are supported are listed at the bottom of this page."

SkyQ was an exception that got it's own statement: "Sky Q behaves slightly differently however as you’ll need to manually select the UHD option in BBC iPlayer to access the episodes."
