No worries @ELewsley. Samsung HQ are still investigating the exact cause, but at least this should give you guys a quicker way to resolve it in the meantime.

Hi all,

Just adding some advice we've received from our TV Tech team to this thread.

Appears that a cold boot of the TV resolves the issue: Press & hold the Power key on the remote until the Samsung logo appears. (May take a couple of attempts though. Much of the other troubleshooting you guys have shared achieves the same effect, but a cold boot is the easiest way to do it.)

Isn't this bassicaly a complete reebot or essentially what we were doing with our temporary solution the unplug the TV for 10-15 minutes from the wall while you have the USB device pluged in.

Here is the problem this would be temporary if it is the same thing.

All this happened from the November / December Firmware updates that went live even if we had the "no update" option selected.

At least progress, at least indirectly Samsung said something about it and acknowledged it. Yet the reality is we are aproaching March and we are still plagued with this issue and who knows how many more that don't complain here or don't even know they have this issue cause they don't use USB devices, overall a very unpleasant situation with the Samsung TVs.

Samsung support.. yea that's a good joke. They will blame the mainboard at the end of any serious and longer conversation.

Okay try this method:

- open the TV from the remote

- plug in the USB device in

- close the TV from the remote

- unplug your power cord from the TV and keep it unplugged for a few minutes (0 power to the TV)

- plug it back in so it gets power again

- open TV with the remote and check your USB device ability to browse the files on them

It should work but as soon as you shut your TV off from the remote everything turns bad again and you will need to redo that entire process to get it to work again. Good luck.

Some form of a class action against Samsung is called for. Unwilling to fix a firmware issue they pushed out that's broken the tv.

i spent €1,000 on my tv only 2 years ago. Out of warranty and quoted €200 to change the motherboard when that's not the issue.

You aren't the only user that sugested legal action.

Maybe you guys are unto something. :(

I'll settle for a new firmware update that fix it, one could dream..

21 day update

21 days since I got my TV back from Samsung.  As I mentioned earlier

1.  the paperwork said they replaced the motherboard

2.  As soon as I got it back I went into settings and disabled Auto Updates

3.  Despite 2 (above) the next day the TV firmware was updated - I assume by a Samsung 'push' connection.

Status Now:   The TV is still working just fine.  I am able to access media on an attached USB stick AND I am able to access media on my PC via the DLNA server configure on my PC.  The DLNA server software that you install and run on your Windows PC is in fact from LG and it works perfectly in conjunction with ant DLNA compatable TV - and that includes Samsung.  Called LG SmartShare, use your search engine to find it.

Will post a further update in around another 3 weeks

I've just been on the phone for half an hour with Samsung Customer Support and once again tried all the various steps like powering off my tv, removing and reinserting the usb sticks, doing a factory reset etc and once again nothing working. She connected remotely to my set and tried a few other things but again nothing worked.

She told me I needed to contact their engineers; Martin Dawes, and pay to get it repaired as it's outside of it's warranty.

I told her about this forum and about all the other people around the world having this exact same problem but she insisted it was a hardware issue and the usb port was faulty. I told her there are three usb ports on my tv and was the same on all of them and the sme with different usb drives and tried suggesting to her it must be a firmware update that was causing this issue, not only to my tv but to all the others. But she wasn't interested and insisted it was an issue with the ports.

I've had enough of this. It's so frustrating. My tv is only 4 years old!

It is now around 1 month since my TV was returned to me by Samsung after their repair, which I understand was replace the motherboard.  All is still working fine, though my use of the USB ports is much less than before.  Let me explain.

Pre-repair I used the USB ports every day to watch programs I had downloaded from a streaming service onto my PC - copied to USB, you know how it goes.  (BTW if you are able to access SBS TV in Australia you will be amazed at what they offer - NO NOT PORN - their URL is https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/ )  [hint - use a VPN]

Anyway when my USB ports stoped working and Samsung refused to fix I searched for another way and discovered the DLNA server solution.  I downloaded the SmartShare program ( https://www.lg.com/au/support/smart-share )and installed it on my PC, then using the MediaHub function on the TV I was able to connect the TV to the PC and watch any media stored on the PC - TV shows, Film, even listen to music. So far so good, but after just a week or 2 suddenly the MediaHub function on my TV stoped working as well.  Media Hub would start and woulod connect to the PC but then refuse to load ANY media - the old familiar spinning wheel of death that I had happen with USB sticks!

What I am saying here is that it was my experience that it was not ONLY the USB ports that were 'broken'  it was the MediaHub function as well.

Check your MediaHub - all of its functions, including the ability to connect to your PC using a DLNA server service on your PC!

Eventually Samsung repaired my TV at NO COST to me.

Read back over my past posts - you are in the UK where there are very strong consumer laws - understand those laws then USE THEM.  Contact the authorities responsible for enforcing consumer rights, get their advise , then act!

That is what I did - you MUST be persistant, you MUST be polite, you MUST not relent, and above all you MUST document everything - try to restrict your communications to email, letters or on-line chat were you can get a transcript.

Good Luck!
