Lip sync on Q90R with 5.1 input

I -- and judging from posts in various fora on the web, a lot of other customers -- experience lip sync issues with 5.1 surround sound input on the Q90R (firmware v1066).

Specifically, I experience this on TV channels that are broadcast with 5.1 sound, but not on TV channels that are broadcast with only stereo sound.

This means that I can watch a show on one TV channel with the (stereo) sound and picture in perfect sync, and then simply change channel to another TV channel to experience a mismatch between the (surround) sound and picture. Switching back to the first TV channel, the (stereo) sound and picture is again in perfect sync. So lame 😕

The lip sync issues are present using the Q90R built-in speakers as well as with a Sonos Amp -- however, again, only with 5.1 TV channels, which also means that I cannot use the options for adding a general delay on the sound/picture as that, while perhaps fixing the 5.1 TV channels, will simply shift the issue to the stereo TV channels.

@Samsung: Needless to say, having such issues on a flagship model is really bad.. What are the plans for fixing this (expectedly, through a firmware update to get the TV to process 5.1 sound input properly)?

Extract:

Relevant to us here is eARC, or enhanced Audio Return Channel. While Dolby Atmos can be passed over regular ARC today (via Dolby Digital Plus) eARC offers improved bandwidth for higher-quality Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio streams, including Atmos. The new format also has lip-sync compensation built-in.

While the bandwidth part is true, my understanding is that avoiding the excessive audio delay in the TV should have been possible without eARC (and without HDMI 2.1). HDMI Dynamic Auto Lip-Sync has been possible to include since (I believe) HDMI 1.3. But that has no chance to work if the TV delays the sound more than video.

So unless an "eARC" stamped update necessitates a verification process to show that also lip-sync is achieved I'm a bit sceptic. Also because of the tech information (some pages back) that SW can not completely remove the excessive audio delay.

I was told by the service guy that no more could be done with the tv software, not sure bout the soundbar. Will be interesting to see if the 2020 models have the same issues. The soundbar is completely new I think.

Hi @userjYtfoTda0t

Valid points, especially that wrt the TV OCB delaying the audio signal more than the video signal and I don't profess to know the answer.  I am hoping that the 'eARC update' will include some fixes to the HDMI CEC related problems being experienced over the HDMI ARC interface between the Q series TV and Soundbar.  I've connected my external sources into the Q90 Soundbar so I'm not experiencing lip sync problems but I have had CEC problems, particularly with the Soundbar.

For anybody wanting to see the internal Samsung engineer brief regarding lip sync, please see attached image - note however that this was not intended for public knowledge... so thank you to the engineer for sharing with me, even though he shouldn't have done so.

I've blanked out the email address of the Samsung employee who created it.

Hi all,

I asked the UK CEO's Office if they could confirm a date for the eARC update.  Their response is as follows:

'Our Product Specialists have confirmed that eARC is “imminent” but we cannot commit to a specific date currently.'

due To the fact that the service tech couldn't fix the lip sync with my tv using the latest software they requested that I sent my soundbar away for testing. Received a message today that they have found an issue and they are waiting for parts, will be interesting to find what they have found and going to replace. Maybe an upgraded part? Anyone else had similar?

hmm now that is very interesting. Please keep us posted as to the outcome of your repair/upgrade.
