So, of the nigh on 400 TVs supported in BBC iplayer for the Blue Planet II  HLG episodes none are from Samsung. Oh joy.

...

Moderator edit: Original thread title was "Blue Planet 2 HLG - No Samsung". With the OP's permission, the title was changed on 12/03/2018 to accurately reflect the dominant theme of the thread as it has progressed. If the reader would like to know more about the HLG format, please check out the BBC's page and FAQ's on it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/projects/high-dynamic-range Thank you, AntS.

So the PS4 bbc iPlayer app gets a UHD update but my ks8000 that I bought last year won't actually display in HDR.
Great.

Just realised the HDR sampling on mine was on 4:2:0, changed to 4:2:2 and the colour boosted significantly so had to dial it back down to 50.

Interesting that switching from 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 boosted colour saturation. Surely that must be a bug either in the Roku, or more likely the TV.

I can offer some speculation I'm assuming we are talking about the 4K50/60Hz modes.

4K50/60 4:2:0 is one of three different modes. in HDMI2.0a/b this can either be 8, 10 or 12 bits.

However, 4K50/60 4:2:2 is only supported at 12bit. 8 and 10bits are NOT supported in HDMI2.0a/b

The PS4Pro uses this mode for its HDR gaming. The content isn't at 12bits of colour depth, but this mode is instead used as a "container" for the 8 or 10bit content.

So, by setting 4:2:2 perhaps you are forcing it to use the 12bit mode. And, perhaps the Samsung behaves differently when it sees this mode. Perhaps the bug only applies to the 10bit modes, for whatever reason.

Either way I can now see a lot more why Samsung Engineering kept saying HLG-over-HDMI wasn't "supported" when we kept insisting it worked - that's Engineer-speak for "buggy and/or doesn't work reliably".

Is this bug directly causing the “wrong gamma curve” issue?

Since I fixed the random colour space issue I’ve put gamma back to zero and it looks brilliant.

The "wrong gamma curve" issue will cause colours in the luminence mid-range to appear overly bright.  Setting the gamma to -3 helps move that wrong gamma curve closer to the correct gamma curve, by bending the RED line in this chart to be closer to the BLUE target line.

The "wrong colour space" issue causes colour across the whole luminence range to be under-saturated, as instead of occuping the REC.2020/P3 colour space (the BIG TRIANGLE), they only occupy the REC.709 colour space (the SMALL TRIANGLE). Setting the colour space to CUSTOM forces the TV to use the big triangle.

Great.

PS4 isn't receiving the HLG stream it seems.

Not sure why, it's capable.

Hold on lads, don't just the Roku/PS4 out just yet, there might have been production issues at the Beeb end to blame for the washed out look and flickering.

The flickering during tonight's game was only a BBC issue as it wasn't visible on the Dutch or Belgian feeds... It was however very noticeable.

The washed out color HDR issue seems more Samsung as it is consistently bad across countries and different feeds on these models.

So the suggestion from turbat is to set the colour space to auto am I right in order to force the colour space to rec2020. Am I correct?
