Feature not available without smart remote

I had to purchase a new smart remote for my tv. It turns on my tv but that’s it. It won’t do anything else. I tried holding down the return and play button to pair it but nothing happens. When I try to go to my directv guide it says “This feature is only available with a Samsung smart remote “.
