Have tried to hard reset my tablet so that I can give it to someone else without my user data - but on reset the system is requesting my original ID and password .... which it then doesn't recognise .... help!

Where did you buy the Tab from, @jagtheelder?
Do you have multiple accounts set up on the Tablet? Is it asking for a Samsung Account or Google Account?
If it's a Samsung Account you can log into Find My Mobile and unlock it from there.
