If it was an update that breaks the screen there would probably be a lot more complaints, regardless - As long the phone is inside the warranty Samsung would cover all repairs. If its outside warranty the repair costs are indeed for yourself. The only thing you can still try is a factory reset with the button combination:
Press and hold the key in the same time: POWER BUTTON, VOLUME UP and HOME BUTTON
When STARTUP ANDROID LOGO appears on the screen released all pressed keys
Wait to installing system update to enter recovery mode
ANDROID RECOVERY MODE MENU WILL DISPLAY,
Select >>> wipe data / factory reset <<< to go to the next step
Select >>> Yes <<< proceed to the next step
Select >>> Reboot system now <<< done! wait until restart.
