I had a few small cracks on the front screen of my phone after dropping it a year ago, since then I have had a case on it and have been very careful not to drop it. Today in the heat, with the case on, and not dropping it, the cracks on the front have grown and the back of my phone is smothered in cracks. I haven't dropped it at all and have had the case on all day. Is this normal?

Unfortunately as the display integrity has been compromised then Yes the cracks can grow.
This can be due to continued movement of the display by your tapping on it to type etc , debris , dust and weather conditions like heat which can make the display expand and also from the heat of the phones battery. That's my personal opinion.
If this was my phone I'd visit a Samsung Experience Store or Samsung Service Centre and enquire to the cost of replacing the screen.
There would most likely be a charge for the repair as accidental damage isn't included in the 24 month manufacturing warranty.
If you have phone insurance or home Contents insurance then that maybe an idea.
Also some Bank Accounts provide mobile phone cover as a perk of the account.
Excess fees and T&C's would need to be checked.
Of course it's your phone and that's upto you .
I wish you all the best with this situation.
