A70 screen will not dim/USB connection.

Hey,

I've noticed a problem with my A70 regarding trying to dim the screen when locking manually or expecting it to lock after screen timeout.

Basically, my phone won't sleep, at least not whilst charging. I spent a good while playing around with settings on my phone, such as timeout and lock screen settings. I also powered off the device but no luck.

After trying to figure out the problem further I discovered that the notification tray is being constantly updated every few seconds swapping between "Android system USB connector connected" and "Android system USB connector disconnected". So presumably this is what is keeping the phone awake as it thinks it is being constantly connected and disconnected from source USB source. I cleaned out the USB port but it was pretty clean to begin with. I'm not getting any notifications regarding any moisture detection.

The A70 charges just fine (though sometimes there is a slight delay to it recognising being plugged in) and it seems that the USB tethering interface is working well as I can use the remote debugging feature in Google Chrome (for web development purposes) just fine. As far as I can tell, there are no actual issues with the USB port - it functions as I would expect.

The A70 was last updated on the 14th August to "Security Patch level: 1 July 2019" and looking over the log of updates I see that "The charger/USB port's moisture detection algorithm has been improved" - so someone somewhere has been looking at this feature and I doubt it coincidence that my device has just developed a fault, given that I've not had it anywhere near moisture or excessive dirt.. and the port still actually works!

I've also tried Safe Mode but the issue persists. Also, if I power the device off, then plug it into the wall, power it on, the notification issue stops... until I unplug it/switch off the wall socket - then it comes back again.

Anyone else having similar problems?

Hello, finally have mine working.

It looks as though there may be several potential causes to this annoying problem.

I tried the following:

 -  Cleared cache/data - Didn't work.

 -  Factory reset - Didn't work.

 -  Tried fudging the notifications by turning off all the notifications I could find (Apps > (Showing system apps) > USB Settings). - Partial fix, no pop-ups etc but the phone will sometimes randomly switch the screen on and its downhill from there.

I have a new A70, only 6 weeks or so and, have a gel casing and gorilla glass (installed from day one).  I treat this phone like a new-born baby and guarantee I've not dropped this in any water or sat in a steamer at the gym, ahhhhh.

I only noticed this since a recent update (maybe 2 weeks or so ago?  I'm in the UK with O2).

I checked the charging connector with a watch makers lens/magnifier under excellent lighting and could not see any corrosion whatsoever but, I still gently cleaned the contacts with an ear bud (most of the cotton removed and cut in half with a blade to thin it out - used a little isopropyl alcohol and quickly dried with a hair dryer on a low setting.

 Still did not work!

THE FIX - FOR ME AT LEAST:

 -   Open the dialler and type *#0808# (it's normally *#2873# on other Samsung mobiles but it did not open the USBSettings app at all).

 -   As soon as you press the last '#', the USBSettings menu will appear with several bullet-point style options:

                                MTP

                                PTP

                                RNDIS+DM+MODEM

                                RMNET+DM+MODEM

                                RMNET+DM+MODEM+ADPL

 -  I selected the last option, pressed 'Apply', exited, confirmed the setting stayed the same, pressed 'Apply' again and then pressed the 'REBOOT' button.

It's been several days now, and the phone has been rock-solid and stable.

I can imagine that moisture on the USB C port can cause this type of problem, along with physical damage due to mishandling - I have no doubt Samsung would have cherry picked either one.  The Engineers more than likely simply change the charger module (PCB/Flex) as step number one as this  is probably the fastest solution.  Performing software calibration/diagnostics/updates after that might be done as well but, I guess we'll never know.  You might get lucky and have it repaired under warranty, but I can't be without a phone for 3 weeks and get plunged back into the dark ages whilst I wait for the repair diagnosis and must pay for it as well (potentially).

I read a thread on this forum, might even be this post, not sure but, the OP stated the Cause' was 'Talking on the phone in the rain' - I guess that could cause issues with your phone, but here in the UK, the rain is very light most of the time, the charging port faces downward too.  Most of us use covers or casings too.

I really like the A70, it's a fantastic piece of kit, but man, I sometimes wish I just had my old Nokia 3110, 2110 or Ericsson 337!

GOOD LUCK and post if you have success so others can benefit too!

Thank you SOOOOOO much!!! This worked for me as well. I sure hope that this super anoying problem will never return. Why can Samsung not fix this problem? It seems rather common.

I just tried this and it did not work for me. Now reset.

For me the problem is intermittent but the above solution did not work immediately after applying the change

I have tried all of the above suggestions this morning but nothing seems to work. My battery is draining so fast! I bought my phone from the vodafone website so im not sure about warranty etc! Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Very frustrating!
