There are physical differences: the 9000s speaker units being just a little bigger than the 8500s; this because the latter has a 2.1/4" midrange speaker rather than the 8500s' 2" speaker.

Both models deliver a specified 54W

Samsung suggests the 9000s is specifically designed for Sound+ Soundbars which have enhanced internal BASS response.

An included wireless dongle must be used with the models below to facilitate the connection with the 9000s

The 8500s has no such dongle because it can connect with the Soundbars that don't have built-in WiFi

Samsung do publish a compatibility chart for each:

Compatibility: The SWA-9000S Wireless Rear Speaker Kit is compatible with the following Samsung Soundbars (all sold separately)-

  • MS Series: HW-MS550, HW-MS560, HW-MS650, HW-MS651, HW-MS660, HW-MS661, HW-MS6500, HW-MS6501, HW-MS6510, HW-MS6511, HW-MS750, HW-MS751, HW-MS760, HW-MS761
  • N Series: HW-N850
  • Q Series: HW-Q80R

Compatibility: The SWA-8500S Wireless Rear Speaker Kit is compatible with the following Samsung Soundbars (all sold separately)-

  • M Series: HW-M450, HW-M4500, HW-M550, HW-M560
  • N Series: HW-N450, HW-N550, HW-N650
  • R Series: HW-R550, HW-R650
  • Q Series: HW-Q60R, HW-Q70R

FYI the 9000s does connect to the Soundbars specified for the 8500s (you don't use the included Dongle)

PROs:

  • The 9000s, being the current model, is readily available.
  • The 8500s is cheaper

CONs:

  • The 9000s, being designed specifically for the Sound+ range, may lack in certain frequencies when used with the 8500s specified soundbars, though I challenge you to spot the difference
  • The 8500s is discontinued, so may be difficult to acquire new.

Did anyone succeed in connecting SWA-8500s with Q800T?

8500s + Samsung Q800Tworks well (that's my configuration).
You just need to set the REAR sound level to +5 or +6 to boost the rear.

On the other hand, I have some problems with the 800T that creates a sound offset from the built-in speakers (let's not talk about the Q-Symphony that has the same problem).
However, it is possible to add a delay with a positive value ... but not negative ...
So, it's super annoying.
Does anyone have the same problem ?
(my TV is a Samsung Q95T)

You stated that the 9000S will work with the soundbars specific to the 8500S without the dongle.  How do you get it to work?  I have the HW-Q60T and I am not using the dongle but it still doesn't work.
