HW-K650 and Two R1 Wirelss Speakers in 5.1 With KS7000 TV

Navigator
Hi Nick

I think all radiant speakers use the same tweeters and the difference between them is the subwoofer size. R3s and up also have a different stand/leg (you can actually see the woofer through it) .
I like my R3s a lot, mainly because the music sounds great with them and they look great with my white wood furniture
I think they sound a little better with MS650, because it has "warmer" sound than K650, and generally sounds similar to R's.

As for surround, they are really really sensitive to their placement due to their omnidirectional sound. If you place one against the wall, in the corner, and other other one in the open they will sound very different. Something that won't happen with regular speakers.

Surround experience really depends on the content. Sadly most TV shows don't use rear channels much. And like you said, the lack of bass from three center channel was really ruining my experience, especially after I was constantly looking for it lol.
I really hope Samsung will fix it, cause I'm gonna mount K650 on the wall in my bedroom soon.

I have R3's and while they do have better base I can't say they perform any better as surrounds. Like Nick0, I'm still not impressed. I never really even notice the surrounds are there no matter what movie i'm watching and with the center speaker sounding so thin on the voices I tend to always end up switching back to just the sound bar before the movie finishes as it seems to give a fuller overall sound. Being that I can't hear the surrounds anyway this seems to be the better choice...

That's my experience as well, tinny center speaker on K650.  Need to add that the volume on the K650 drops significantly with DD5.1.

These are the two known defects of the K650.

I've asked Samsung (Ryan) to confirm this with his technical engineers.  He has not done this as yet.  He did, however, wrote me saying the K650 is not defective, but admitted that it's his subjective opinion, not objectively verified by his engineers and clearly contradicts our tests/experience.

For these defects to get resolved we need first and foremost for Samsung to admit it exists.  Ryan is not helping with this although he can.  That is what I expected from this Samsung forum.

Ironically, this is why Samsung will continue to lose customers and stifle innovation.

Ryan,  you know what to do.

Good morning @NotSamsung

Apologies if my previous messages weren't clear, this is a good opportunity to clarify where we currently are.

Unfortunately, I'm not a technical expert for the K650 and can't directly answer your questions. I've passed yours (and the other Community Members') comments and feedback to the specialists for review. As soon as I hear back from them, I'll reply to everybody with an update.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how myself and the team can offer any further assitance. Just to be clear, we will answer any questions we can. In the event we can't (like we have at the moment) we always refer to our specialists.

Just a heads up for those I've spoken to, I'm on annual leave from 7th - 14th July. The other moderators will be monitoring this thread in my absence.

Hi all,

I've updated my R1's with the latest firmware 3114. Tested real quick, seems ok...

Regards,

Jase

Thanks Ryan,

At least you now reveterted: you stopped claiming the K650 is not defective. That in itself is progress of some kind.

We would appreciate an answer from your Samsung engineers why the center speaker sounds so tinny on DD5.1 (i.e. it obviously lacks bass crossover) and why the volume decreases so much when decoding DD5.1 assuming it uses Dolby Volujme.  These are the two obvious defects.

And would appreciate a coherent English explanation of HDMI Audio Format, and Audio Format on the Samsung TV's;  how that interacts / affects the K650. Surely Samsung can create as user guide that clearly explains settings utilising non-technical words?  And why is there no display on the K650 when DD5.1 is being decoded?  Your K950 has some of this. Also,  when will the K650 get DTS5.1?

I honesly can't wait for your response to admit that the K650 is indeed defective. That would give us the justification to get it back to the retailer for a full refund.

It's simple Ryan.

Hi all,

I attempted to upgrade the R1 firmware from 3111 to 3114 via the MultiRoom Apps. But the upgrade is failed. Any suggestion?

One of my R1's failed to upgrade with red blinking light.

I did a reset on the device and that resolved the problem.

(Pressning vol - and vol + for 5 seconds)

I had to reconfigure the connection after this upgrade succeeded.

I retry the upgrade without reset the speaker. The upgrade is completed very smoothly.

MY UE49KS8000 was updated with new software yesterday. Not sure what the effect was but I don't think it was to do with the WIFI 5.1.
Having said that, with the HW-K650 volume set to about 25% and the R1's at about 75%, the surround sound effect is quite impressive. Trying to find movies on Netflix that might emphasise it, Antman (I know!) and scenes from Helix, certainly demonstrated a good spatial effect.

I think finally, the system is there and behaves to acceptable level, for me at least.

3114.2 is out for HW-K650 if you dare.
