Samsung Pay on Galaxy Watch6 Classic

I have recently moved from the Watch5 Pro to the Watch6 Classic.

On the Watch5 I used Samsung Pay. When launching the app and making a payment, there was no need to turn NFC on/off as this was done automatically - safe and convenient. You simply launched Samsung Pay, selected your card and paid.

I now find on my Watch6 that when using Samsung Pay (actually it's now Samsung Wallet) I have to manually turn NFC on/off. When I launch the app Pay by long-holding the 'back' button, I get a screen message that says 'Turn on NFC to Use Samsung Wallet', followed by an NFC and contactless payments on/off toggle. I then have to go back and re-launch the app to select my card and pay.

Has anyone else come across this?

Samsung has said that this is a fault and are offering to replace the watch, but I'd love to hear from anyone who has either experienced this or has knowledge of whether this is a fault or just a change in the design of the process.

Hi, my galaxy watch 6 classic does the same thing, I thought that was normal, are they sure it's a fault?

Surely can't be a fault.

I use Google wallet and have always had to toggle NFC on/off myself....havnt used Samsung pay before though

Try using Google wallet, I have that on both phone and watch and NFC stays on on both devices unless I turn it off. Google wallet used to be Google pay.

Hi, say if I am being naive. What's wrong with just leaving NFC on all the time? The battery seems unaffected.

I've configured my Watch 5 so that double pressing the top right button opens up Google Wallet. I can then just tap my watch to the payment reader and I'm done.

Just leave NFC on, then neither app prompts.

I've always subscribed to the they that leaving NFC on presents a security risk. I therefore only turn su on when I need it.

I also got Galaxy watch 6. The first days Samsung Wallet turned on NFC automatically as you indicated with the watch 5. But after some updates it also asks me to manually enable NFC.

I reached out to Samsung Wallet team and the first person who understood the issue said that I needed to go to the following on the watch: settings - connections - NFC and contactless payments - others (select apps to open nfc)

In there I would need to toggle on Samsung wallet. However it is not in there and it never was (even the first few days when it was working properly); instead I only find Samsung health in "others".

I told them this but then the next person changed the course of the conversation entirely so I gave up...

I've been buying Samsung products for many years now and I genuinely like them. What you describe here is a perfect example of how their customer service and ability to get to grips with the actual issue is sadly lacking. I have experienced similar situations on many occasions over the years and, like you, have just given up. I getting to that stage with this. Grateful to all who have responded.
