TV hijacks right control stick to change volume when in Steam Link app/game since the latest update

See this Reddit post for more information. When using any of:

- Wired Xbox controller

- Wireless Xbox controller

- Logitech F710 controller

With Steam Link on several Samsung TV models (QN65QN85DAFXZA,qe55qn90a), the right control stick now adjusts volume in the app and in-game. This makes Steam Link unplayable for people as the right control stick can't be used without making the TV hit 0 or 100% volume.

It looks like this may be related to the 2111 release, as this was working previously and many users are reporting the same problem now. This originally seemed to be a problem with Steam, but now we realize it may be a problem with Samsung's new software.

I'm having the same issue with Dualsense & DS4 controllers. Right stick plays havoc with the audio post the 2111 update.

I've also been having this issue since the update, with both wired and wireless Xbox controllers. The right joystick controls the volume at all times, not just when I'm using SteamLink.

I have the same issue with my Xbox One controller, the right joystick keeps controlling volume while also passing through other commands

This is definitely a TV level problem as it happens across all apps, not just Steam Link though that's where I noticed it. Both my official DS4 controller and a third party one that worked until the update now wreak havoc with the volume (though with different buttons, weirdly). All evidence on my end points to an issue with the 2111 software update, not an app or controller.

I am having this same issue with an Xbox controller. It worked fine for me yesterday but today the right thumbstick is controlling the volume, and is making any games unplayable. I noticed it while trying to play a game through steam link, but even with steam closed the controller is changing the volume.

Just piling on to agree with all of this. Right stick of an Xbox controller manipulates the volume. So any game you play on Steam Link or the Xbox app that uses the right stick will yo-yo the volume around while you play.

Had this issue crop up for us on saturday as well. We had two controllers connected and both were game controllers and volume/tv controllers haha. Hoping they fix soon, we've been playing with steam link for months.

I'm new to this forum. Do mods/reps jump on here and acknowledge problems? Give us workarounds? Provide ETAs for fixes?

Or do we just sit on here and gripe until one of us notices the TV has updated and its fixed?

Just encountered this same issue today. Using the right stick on a connected game pad moves volume up and down, and clicking the stick mutes. Was working perfectly before the Samsung software update, now the TV is almost unusable for gaming.

Everyone please call Samsung customer service (via the support option on the TV) to get attention to this bug. When I called, they said I was the first report. Sadly, I think this forum isn't really monitored.

the same issue on my TV, @samsung please verify it and release a fix asap, the gaming community only buys samsung tv because of the steam link app, and you did that, please verify a way to disable that option when in game

Same here. Thumbstick volume up and down. Contacted samsung support and they said that its not they problem. Blamed steam app. Unbelievable *****!

So based on everything we've gathered, here are my current assumptions:

Based on the on-screen instructions someone shared and contrary to everything I would've assumed, this seems to be a deliberate feature on Samsung's part. On one hand that makes sense if you're using a controller as your remote to watch TV. I assume the way it's supposed to work is that individual apps then take over the controller when you open them and remap it to the app's own needs, hence Samsung blaming Steam. Perhaps in theory it's supposed to be volume control in the Samsung menus and then serve normal right-stick functionality in Steam, Xbox, etc. That would actually be a reasonable feature, though pretty superfluous in my opinion.

The problem seems to be that Samsung either rolled the feature out without telling app devs, pushed it out before Steam was ready (and maybe other apps, but Steam is the only gaming app I use), or it's just an outright bug. Either way it seems to be on Samsung to either fix it on their end or make sure other devs know what's up.

Just created an account to post here, same issue, it is now impossible to play using the TV. This is unbelievable that Samsung denies their responsability when it is clearly the result of their update.

One more update from me unless I hear otherwise. I ran it through Steam's tech support too, and though whoever responded wasn't immediately able to help they at least said they'd pass it up the ladder. I was also pointed to their relevant forums where I've come to the conclusion that neither Samsung nor Steam really support this app any more and we've been lucky it lasted this long. This thread especially was very informative (assuming it's true information), so I'm not terribly hopeful we'll get a fix here. Pretty disappointing all around. I'm going to look into just switching over to a Raspberry Pi connected to the TV.
