Hi

We've found the judder settings on Samsung TVs to be confusing. It seems like the TVs have two judder modes, off and on, and that setting just adjusts when it's off or on. When judder is off, the TV appears to have a lower frame rate than it should and everything judders, even though most video is 50i/60i, it doesn't display it that way.

If you turn it somewhere in the middle, camera pans start out with terrible judder then suddenly catch up and move smoothly, it's horribly annoying and unnatural and I've never seen a TV handle camera pans so badly.

With judder up to the maximum, the TV more quickly switches to smoothing camera pans etc, so the stutter at the point it decides to switch from one mode to the other doesn't last as long. Also you need to turn blur reduction on in order for judder reduction to seem to have an effect.

We've found having both settings up to the maximum seems to reduce judder the most, but there is still abnormal judder that shouldn't be there in the first place.

This is the worst TV I've seen for adding it's own judder and picture glitches.

Regards

Phil

I had the curved tv for around 3 weeks, but how nice it looked the picture did not cut it. The opera/blur effect no matter what setting i did, would not improve. I sent it back and paid a litle extra for an upgraded 50" samsung which i can confirm has the both blur and motion settings on it, whic the curved tv did not.

Hi

LED clear motion strobes the back light, it's goal is to emulate CRT type displays or plasma displays, which didn't have issues with motion blur due to the way they quickly flashed up each frame then went to black. It was our brains that held the image due to our persistance of vision and avoided blur. Modern TVs are sample and hold displays, the frame is shown constantly, so it overrides our persistance of vision. When something moves on these displays our eyes follow the illusion of something moving, but really they are just a series of static images. As our eye moves we are bluring these static images, just like taking a picture with a camera panning on a slow shutter speed.

Modern LCD TVs overcome this bluring by creating extra frames, increasing the shutter speed if you like, so the bluring is reduced considerably, but this can give rise to all sorts of odd artefacts, especially around things that are moving.

So some TVs have the option to revert back to black frame insertion like older TVs, but because the backlight is now turning on and off very fast, it essentially generates less light overall, so appears darker, and some people find the flicker annoying and uncomfortable.

Overall Samsung seem to have the most buggy and rough and ready blur reduction capabilities of any TV out there.

Regards

Phil

No matter where I put the settings on the Auto Motion or Digital Clean View which alledges to smooth the picture I get lots of judder or whatever your want to call it. This is especially annoying when watching live sports. It is almost unwatchable. If I had known how bad this would be I would never have bought this fancy QLED 4K 65 inch overpriced piece of poo. I would rather have the less crisp pitcher that doesn't jump around on a 65 inch tv i can get from Walmart for $600

You need to calibrate the set, if you haven't already. Once you do THAT, it's quite good- but for most that I've seen complaining about the Samsung 4k SUHD Sets have the default High Contrast Store modes still set. Try this:

Full Calibration:
PICTURE
Picture Mode: Movie
Backlight: 9
Contrast: 92
Brightness: 45
Sharpness: 25
Color: 53
Tint: G51/R49

PICTURE SIZE
Picture Size: 16:9
Fit to screen: ON

ADVANCED SETTINGS
Dynamic Contrast: OFF
Black Tone: OFF
Flesh Tone: 0
RGB Only Mode: OFF
Color Space: Custom
Gamma: -2

COLOR SPACE (R, G, B)
Red: 22, 7, 0
Green 26, 43, 4
Blue: 0, 6, 33
Yellow: 44, 46, 4
Cyan: 25, 51, 56
Magenta: 21, 8, 49

WHITE BALANCE (2 point)
R-Offset: -2
G-Offset: 5
B-Offset: 0
R-Gain: 0
G-Gain: -7
B-Gain: 3

WHITE BALANCE (10 point) (R, G, B)
10%: 49, 41, 30
20%: 44, 34, 31
30%: 28, 30, 30
40%: 20, 23, 28
50%: 14, 12, 14
60%: 7, 11, 12
70%: 3, 8, 6
80%: 2, 7, 5
90%: 0, 0, -1
100%: 0, 0, 0

PICTURE OPTIONS
Color Tone: Movie1 (or Movie2)
Digital Clean View: AUTO
MPEG Noise Filter: AUTO
HDMI Black Level: Low
HDMI UHD Color: OFF
Auto Motion Plus: Clear (or your preference)
Smart LED: Standard (or High for better contrast and deep blacks)
Cinema Black: ON

Could you please help me.
I have just purchased a Q90R. I'm looking for the smoothest motion possible. I actually like the soap opera effect unlike 90% of the world. Should i just leave LED Clear Motion clicked with Judder reduction set to 10? Would this be my best option? When choosing this Blur Reduction is automatically set to Zero.
thank you for your help.

Avfoums.com has far superior settings, and also rtings.com has additional settings if you don't like the avforums settings. These settings are going to give you mediocre viewing at best.

The Rtings settings were included along with others on the link I posted. However I will post a direct link here as it gives additional information https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/q90-q90r-qled/settings

By all means also have a look at Av Forums

I always see the Movie picture mode recommended. I find it to be too dark to enjoy anything I sm watching, including live sports. Is there a brighter picture mode that can be calibrated to reduce the judder/skipping for the Q70R?

Thanks
