I have just convinced my partner that we need a new TV and have purchased a Q80D. While I am generally happy with it, one thing I can't seem to make it do is show my NAS as a source. Our previous TV (also a Samsung) had no issues.with doing this. As long as the NAS was on the same network, which it is, the old TV would simply have it listed as a source. The new TV won't do this.

Does anyone know how to get it to show as a source?

Yes, a Samsung Smart TV can connect to a NAS, but it requires a media player that supports network storage:

Install a media player: If your TV doesn't have a built-in media player, you can download one from the TV's app store. VLC media player is a good option.

Make your drive available on the network: Once your drive is live on the network, you can access it from your TV.

Open the media player: On your TV, open the media player and select the Network or Local network option.

Select the drive: All drives on your home network should be displayed. Select the one you want to use.

Play the video: Select the video file you want to play

55Q8F, same problem. But in my case, the DLNA server is sometimes available in sources list, sometimew it dissapears.

Renaming the tv to something simple (i even tested with ABC) does not solve the issue.

I found out that disconnecting from the network (wired or wireless) and reconnecting more han after half a minute later, temporarily solves the issue but it randomly dissapears.

Same DLNA server works fine on older 32H5303, 32J5500, 43J5500, 32J5200, 40J5200 and laptops / phones / tablets...

My DLNA server name was 3 letters (no special chars). Recently (2 days ago) I renamed it to 6 letters (also, no special chars) and it shows all the time... I will update in a few days...

Guys, I have proof that the dlna problem IS NOT A SERVER PROBLEM.

1. Since my server machine has a debian os, i installed 3 DLNA services on it (emby, gerbera and minidlna) and 55Q8F randomly shows all, 2, 1 or none of them without any changes on server. Sometimes even during media playback from one service, it stops and when I check the sources, the respective service is gone form the list and most of the times, at least one other is available... firewall on server machine is completely disabled.

2. Several older samsung tv (32H5303, 32J5500, 43J5500, 32J5200, 40J5200) and laptops / phones / tablets ALWAYS show all DLNA services available and I can play from them.

I do not know what to do, I simply like DLNA functionality, it simply works flawlessly, but not on 55Q8F...

I've investigated further this issue and I found out that the problem is clearly in the Samsung TV software implementation, and I will prove it.

I've downloaded the miniDLNA code for Debian 12 (the OS that I have on my NAS), installed all dependencies and compiled the code.

After that, I installed tcpdump (network packet sniffer).

Step 1: on NAS start tcpdump and capture all incoming and outgoing packets

Step 2: on NAS start miniDLNA server with an notify interval of 60 seconds and maxdebug log level (this shows a lot of garbage in the log, but that is exactly what I wanted):

log_level=artwork=maxdebug,database=maxdebug,general=maxdebug,http=maxdebug,inotify=maxdebug,metadata=maxdebug,scanner=maxdebug,ssdp=maxdebug,tivo=maxdebug
notify_interval=60

At this point, miniDLNA starts sending SSDP notify messages to the clients in the network each 60 seconds.

Starting now, both miniDLNA logs and tcpdump captures show the exact same behavior with regards to packets

Step 3: start any of these:

older tv (Samsung H / J series as mentioned before) and go to the sources menu

VLC on android phone / tablet and go to the list of devices

VLC on windows / Linux pc and open playlist + UPNP list

Whenever miniDLNA sends SSDP notification to the network, each of the mentioned in this step are sending exactly 5 http packets to the NAS and the miniDLNA on the NAS responds with exactly 5 packets (I can see them in the miniDLNA logs and also in tcpdump log). This behavior is constant. The miniDLNA server is always visible in the sources list.

Note that here depending on client implementation, some of the clients might send supplemental packets, querying for contents of the DLNA server, but we can disregard them, they are not in scope, we are only interested in the packets that come exclusively as a response to miniDLNA SSDP packets.

Step 4. Start the 55Q8F TV and go to the sources menu

Here the behavior is not constant (as on step 3):

sometimes the TV sends 5 packets and miniDLNA responds with back 5 packets - the miniDLNA server is visible in the sources list

sometimes the TV sends 4 packets and miniDLNA responds with back 4 packets - the miniDLNA server is NOT visible in the sources list until the next SSDP notify is sent by miniDLNA and the TV responds with the expected 5 packets

Right now it is clear to me that the TV is not responding correctly to SSDP notify from miniDLNA with all 5 packets that other devices are responding to, instead it only responds with 4 packets, and until the time it responds with the 5'th packet, the miniDLNA server is not available in the sources list.

I think with this information, the Samsung engineers can start to investigate the root cause of the problem and hopefully provide a fix in a future software update.

Further investigation shows that the problem is that the TV doesn't always send request for icons/lrg.png.

By running on NAS this command:

tcpdump -A host <TV IP> | grep GET #### replace <TV IP> with the correct TV reserved IP

When it works:

GET /rootDesc.xml HTTP/1.1

GET /ContentDir.xml HTTP/1.1

GET /ConnectionMgr.xml HTTP/1.1

GET /X_MS_MediaReceiverRegistrar.xml HTTP/1.1

GET /icons/lrg.png HTTP/1.1

When it doesn't work:

GET /rootDesc.xml HTTP/1.1

GET /ContentDir.xml HTTP/1.1

GET /ConnectionMgr.xml HTTP/1.1

GET /X_MS_MediaReceiverRegistrar.xml HTTP/1.1

Anyone knows of a sure way to get in contact with Samsung support?

I've tried their get in contact and tell them my investigation details, but after I send the details of the problem, the bot immediately sends me to review a Samsung phone (and I do not want this)...
