Yes. Definitely a Blu-ray. It noticed it right away and gave the name in the drive.

Dear Sirs,

I have change the operating system of my PC from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

When I connect the portable blu ray writer Model SE-506 via USB I can work with CDs and DVDs. But Blu Ray discs are not being recognized anymore.

It seems that the player is not compatible to Windows 10 at all.

Where can I get a driver for Windows 10 and if needed a firmware update?

Many thanks,

Alex

I've read that this writer may not get enough power from a single USB connection. It is suggested that a split cable be used to facilitate simultaneous connection to two USB terminals or that a separately powered hub be used. Could this be the reason this writer is not working as it should?

I can confirm that a split cable does work, whereas my single cable (that came with the drive) does not work when plugged directly into my Surface Book. I had no issue with the single cable when I plugged it into my dock at my desk. Sounds like some of the newer ultrabooks just don't have enough power in their USB ports.

Hi ChampaignDad

Thanks for the response. My laptop is a fully spec'd machine from PC Specialist and if the writer can normally run off just one USB 3.0 port, then I would expect it to run off mine. I guess as you suggest, the only way to find out is to firstly run it off a split cable.

I believe the writer is designed for USB 2.0 ports, so if I'm not mistaken it should also run off USB 3.0's

Just to add my frustration about having a perfectly good BluRay burner Samsung SE-506CB which now won't work with BluRay discs because Samsung/TSST no longer seem to want to support this product and provide a Windows 10 driver.

Come on Samsung - do the decent thing - I'm sure it can't be beyond your massive resources !

My Samsung SE-506 /TSSTcorp BDDVDW SE-506CB USB BD/CD/DVD writer is also suffering from this issue.

I am able to play DVD discs but once a BD disc is placed in the drive it spends ages not recognising the disc and then reports the drive empty to the OS (Win 10). I have tried the SE-506 on three different computers with three different Win 10 builds (Pro 1703, Home 1703 and Pro 1607). I have tried using the manufacturer's supplied single cable and a split cable. All to no avail. I have also run scs.exe and the Win 10 troubleshooter. scs.exe reported no problems found and the Win 10 troubleshooter just repeatedly says the device needs to be rebooted (I'm only prepared to reboot so many times...). Oh and yes, I have tried different BD discs which I know to be working on other devices (including a built-in BD drive in one of the devices, confirming that it's not the CyberLink PowerDVD software, if there was any doubt there).

My SE-506 only gets used infrequently; it was purchased to enable watching of BD and DVD discs when on the go. The SE-506 used to work with BDs a few months ago. The conclusion I have to come to is it would appear that perhaps one of the many Win 10 OS updates may have lead to this failure and Samsung do not appear to have addressed it by releasing an updated driver.

I realise we could get into a blame game situation, with Samsung blaming Microsoft and Microsoft blaming Samung. Corporations this big really need to talk to each other and work together to ensure our consumer products don't become obsolete after a couple of years (or worse, months). The big corporations often claim they are doing their bit to combat global warming but how well does that argument stack up when they're selling products which will be quickly destined for the scrap heap because they can't be used, whilst being otherwise in good physical order?

I have been in contact with the Samsung Blu-ray writer support, who sent me a split USB power cable to try. Both I and my son (who has the same writer and problem) tried it and it makes no difference. This does not seem to be a power issue.

I reported this back to support who have now informed me that they have no other solution - no firmware or driver upgrade.

It would seem we all now have a writer that will not work with Windows 10 and neither Samsung or Microsoft or their affiliates are going to do anything about it. Moderators, please take note of this wholly unacceptable situation.

@mikep6dd - thanks for trying out the support contact - saves the rest of us having to waste our time. I agree with you that it's unacceptable.

I'm also slightly annoyed that this thread has now been tagged as 'solved'.

I'm also in need of drivers/firmware for my Samsung SE-506CB / RSBD Portable BD Writer Model SE - 506 for Windows 10 Home Edition 64-Bit. Please update this thread ASAP with the support required for this device under this operating system. This drive was sold to me on May 2015 through Amazon the year Windows 10 was released, it should have had supported drivers. I cannot find these drivers on Samsung's website. Please help!
