I've never seen an update be overwritten during the update process. Since your phone cannot check for updates, I doubt beta 1 will just suddenly go away. After you install it, if you wait a month or two for the official release, you can go from beta 1 to official.

But in terms of canceling the update or expecting something to change, I've never heard of it ever happening

I had just joined the OneUI 8.5 Beta programme for fun, just to see the community things and etc, but was not actually planning to update. I went into my software update page for curiosity to see if the update was there, and as soon as I clicked onto the page, the download process had already started. It's currently paused and has been at 1% but I want to cancel it, and I'm wondering if it will affect anything like getting future software updates when they release, because this is the only screen I can see when going into the 'check for software updates' in settings. I don't mind it being there at 1% all the time, I just dont want it to stop me from receiving other stable updates and security patches.

You cannot cancel an update. All other updates will be paused until that one finished.

If you don't want to be in the beta your only option really is to backup your phone using smart switch, install the update, then leave the beta program, then reset and downgrade your phone back to one ui 8, then restore the backup once your phone has been reset.

Once you join the beta and the download starts, you're kinda locked into doing it. Though you can reset and downgrade after it finishes

You can opt out of the beta program via the main page of the Samsung members app to fully prevent the device from constantly attempting to download the beta, which is the most effective step in officially withdrawing your device from the One UI 8.5 Beta program. Once you withdraw, your device will revert to receiving public/official software channel updates only. You won't miss any official updates by not installing the beta. Your phone will notify you when the next official public release is available.

But isn't the first beta update only temporary? Wouldn't it just disappear after beta 2 comes out? I dont really mind if it stays there but as long as all other updates go through then im fine. I'm kinda stuck too because another person said that when a stable version releases then it will just override this one.

Thanks, I just wanted to say though that I already withdrew and it still attempts to update by sending notifications and if i resume the update for a few seconds the progress bar goes up. I'm not too worried about it being there, I just don't want it to stop me from getting other updates because the update is just kinda stuck there with no way to get rid of it. I've also looked through other posts and I'm seeing different things everytime, so I'm a bit confused.

A factory reset is needed if you go from beta back to the previous stable. So if you wanted to go back to one ui 8. If you are on 8.5 beta, 8.5 stable will appear as a normal update when it comes out.

Don't install the beta. This wouldn't make it go away but you can wait until the offical release comes out and then proceed with the Beta install. After that you can then install the official One UI 8.5 that will remove the Beta software.

While you are on the beta program, you will not receive separate monthly security updates as they are integrated into the beta builds released by Samsung. Once you move to the official stable software, your device will resume receiving regular, separate security patches as they are released to the public. You don't need to do anything extra to get security updates; they are part of the process, and transitioning to the stable release will happen via a standard update when available.

I see, thank you very much for your help. Just another enquiry, when the stable releases will I be able to go straight from the beta to the stable? Or would I have to download all the betas in order to get to the stable because I know Samsung can be a bit stubborn about this. For example when I was updating someones phone from UI5 to UI8, I had to manually install like 10 updates between them and I'm wondering if the BETA is the same case.

Yes. You'd be able to go straight to the stable version of the software without downloading any intermediate updates.
One UI 5 to One UI 8 is a big jump as you missed out on a lot of updates so for that you would be required to update gradually.

If the current instability is frustrating or impacting your ability to use your device reliably, you should withdraw now. Be prepared to perform a factory reset, and ensure you have a complete device backup beforehand to minimize data loss.

Ultimately, staying enrolled until the public release is typically the smoother path to ending up on the official software version without a data wipe.

Withdrawing mid-program usually requires a full data wipe (factory reset) of your device to revert to the current stable operating system (One UI 8). You risk losing some app data or customizations, even with backups, and re-setting up your device can be an inconvenience. Rejoining later in the cycle might not be guaranteed, as beta program spots can be limited.

I personally would stay on it but the choice is dependent on you.
