With the new Samsung One Ui 2.1 this can be accomplished but I'm suspecting due to the model of your phone you may not get this update.

i.e in my phone.Stock Samsung Text Messages App.

This screen allows a custom colour or picture from my Gallery.

You may need to possibly use another text messaging app such as Textra.

Or another launcher such as Nova Prime as one example.

You can send feedback direct to Samsung using the Samsung Members App.

If your stock Samsung Messages app has this it'll be in Message's, tap on the conversation, 3 little dots in the top right hand corner, customise wallpaper and the options will be at the bottom @loulou79

it doesnt have that option on my phone pictures are my message screen and what i get when i press the 3 dots?

Ok so I'm on Android 10 Samsung One Ui 2.5 and messages version 11.5.10.371

If you don't see these options then your messages app / software version may not support it.

You may have to look at another messages app or launcher such as Nova Prime as one example @loulou79
