I know this is a bit of a dumb question, but as I've never used a mobile phone without a screen protector before thought I'd ask. My screen protectors keep lifting at the edge so I was thinking of removing the stupid thing altogether, would using the spen damage the screen in any way

Unless you have particles of dust like very fine sand stuck to the nib, no it won't.
You are more likely to scratch the screen in normal use than with the S Pen
Best of finding a case friendly screen protector.
Have you been using glass protectors?
Maybe a film type would be better for you
