Whilst not official yet, seems pretty a new Windows system will launch before the end of the year. A future Windows 10 update is called "Sun Valley" and a "Windows 11" has leaked online. https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/windows-11 Whilst at one point Windows 10 was stated to be the last version (with just possibly significant updates) https://www.theverge.com/2015/5/7/8568473/windows-10-last-version-of-windows the line did not hold . For marketing/commercial purposes companies need new systems. Windows 10 support will end in 2025.

The new start menu looks a lot like GNOME 40's. Amusing really because they pretty much stole the entire KDE Plasma user interface design concept for W10. Since W10 is supported for another 4 years there's no reason to be an early adopter and risk all the bugs again. W10 is still not without it's issues but is vastly better now than it was at launch. We still have one 2013 computer running W8.1 Update 1 here, it's still plodding along quite happily (as is the main user who couldn't care less what her computer is running as long as it works for her)

@antikythera I am not particularly familiar with GNOME 40's, however have had a look. Some information here for those who are interested https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2021/03/gnome-40-new-features https://kde.org/plasma-desktop/

You are right, there is no need to rush into Windows 11 and tends to encounter Bugs early on but there will always be a market for a new Windows version. Actually I was a fairly early adopter of Windows 10.

If the 8.1 computer is still running ok and the main user not too fussed , should be fine. Though it seems Extended support will end January 2023. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/faq/windows https://www.lifewire.com/windows-8-end-of-life-4163546

In official unveiling Microsoft announced windows 11 will support some Android apps from Amazon app store,XBox features will be incorporated into Windows and the new system will include automatic HDR to make images in games more vivid. So big gamers may be impressed but something for the rest with Microsoft Teams being enhanced and will have more of a social media feel, whilst more video conference features are being added. As for the design itself we have pretty much had the first look at that.

Apparently it will be a free upgrade for Windows 10 users up to 2022 anyway (as long as meets hardware requirements) https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/windows-11-free-update-windows-10/

Well, I must admit that the announcement was your typical unveiling from the marketting department, but far more buggy and different parts having no sound at all 😅 As a certified microsoft expert (Yes, I have my fair bunch of certifications) I must say that they failed to get me warm with the too-cheesy-marketting. Without being really spectacular.

That said, there are definitely improvements/tweaks and I love them! It's also definitely worth a new windows number.

That said, it's a shame that they will not be properly supporting most computers (In fact, my relatively new gaming PC of a few years old doesn't even meet the hardware requirements while it can crush any task I throw at it).

The hardware limitations might have to push me towards linux as I will feel kinda excluded there. Especially as my hardware isn't written off for quite some years to come.

(Specs: 8x 3.4ghz core, 16 logical processors, nvidia 1800ti video card and 32gb of RAM).

I know that the specs where definitely overkill for the sake of being future proof. But my first generation Ryzen Processor (1700x) is not supported. It's a shame and definitely not a good move for the environment.

It does seem somewhat restrictive and overkill. According to this article Windows 11 may work on older processors but you would need to bypass the warning screen. One of the hard core requirement is is the dual-core 1GHz processor requirement.

Microsoft certainly not recommending it though.
