SAMSUNGS NEW 200MP ISOCELL HP5 CAMERA SENSOR

Samsung semiconductor unveiled a new 200MP camera sensor for smartphones. It is a smaller sensor compared to the company's previous 200MP sensors but still promises improved image and video quality with the use of several new technologies. It could be used by several smartphone brands in the near future.

The ISOCELL HP5 is a 1/1.56-inch camera sensor with 200MP (16,384 x 12,288 pixels) resolution, resulting in each pixel measuring at just 0.5µm.

This is Samsung's smallest 200MP camera sensor. However, the company claims that it doesn't skimp on quality, as newer technologies like Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) and Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI) improve the Full Well Capacity of each pixel.

Some reports claims that it will be used on oppo find X9 pro in October and more Chinese phone will use it.

Sources:

https://semiconductor.samsung.com/image-sensor/mobile-image-sensor/isocell-hp5/

https://www.sammobile.com/news/samsungs-new-200mp-camera-sensor-is-here-with-improved-image-quality/

They have held on announcing this for quite a while, thought it might have been delayed glad to see I was wrong. It's likely to be in a IQOO I thought. It would be good candidate for a ultrawide update maybe being less used to the primary at night. Fingers crossed they make their way into new models long term.

I'd love to see the new flagship sensors not just in Chinese phones as it's a slight disappointment to loyal fans of Samsung's platform. The very marginally better older HP9 on a Samsung super telephoto would be ace (Instant upgrade for me)

Apple tests Samsung screen tech first & Vivo/Xiaomi tests Samsung sensors first. Yes they can be well implemented when they do reach a Samsung phone (The Apple way...) but trailing the industry now after leading doesn't make as a competitive flagship (at least by spec standards). Part of me wonders if we will see some newer battery tech from Samsung tested in a competitor next year maybe?

Is Samsung scaling back ever so slightly it's mobile department longterm to push more as a non competing supplier maybe. If the profit is larger I understand but I'd be sad to see it the Note line and OneUI fade.

How long before Vivo & Apple inspire a 2nd downgrade from 10x form to 4x?

A 4x & 10x would be a good combo but imagine we might loose the 5x & 3x longterm maybe.

The development cycle is quite a few years, so it's either the benefit of a refined packaging in the long term or sticking with older tested tech for cost.

Hopefully we don't see it replace the HP2 longterm in flagships as I'd be surprised if it can compete at low light even with standard sensor microlens tweaks. Be handy for foldables though.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra features four main rear camera sensors: the 200MP main camera uses the Samsung ISOCELL HP2, the 50MP ultrawide camera uses the Samsung ISOCELL JN3, the 10MP 3x telephoto camera uses the Sony IMX754, and the 50MP 5x telephoto camera uses the Sony IMX854.

HP2 is praised by Samsung to be better in low light and night mode, because it captures more light, so the HP5 can even be better? Maybe decreasing the time the camera needs to be kept still to take a picture in night mode? This is superior to the S24 Series according to Samsung. Also I wonder sometimes if these sensor will ever be introduced for selfie camera as its painstakingly hard to take a good selfie on night mode, although it's improved from the S24 series both timing and quality wise, there is place for doing better.

The main 200MP sensor in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is named the Samsung ISOCELL HP2SX. Other rear camera sensors include a 12MP ultra-wide (Sony IMX564), a 10MP 3x telephoto (Sony IMX754), and a 50MP 5x telephoto (Sony IMX854).

I agree on the selfie camera front it really should be about 24MP now at least.

It would just be nice to see more in-house sensor use on Samsungs as hopefully it can lead to some cost cutting for Samsung to put elsewhere and performance optimisation for us users. HP5 for ultrawide and HP9 for Super Telephoto 💯 you would have me! If the 3x Telephoto got even a 50MP upgrade it would make a big difference. Be able to default to ExpertRaw's 24MP/50MP would be a big upgrade.

Hopefully they have worked some magic on the HP5 but I would want to see a test vs the HP2 TBH as it's quite a drop from 0.7 to 0.5 micrometrers. The lens, reflection and coatings are all pretty commonplace for sensors so hopefully it's a better improvement than I can imagine.

I typically side on the role of physics. Bigger photosites pretty much always rule as they take in more photons and leave you less shadow noise. Maybe the post processing hides it well so it can be an upgrade. Was the new version simply a sensor shrinking for more clients with thinner phones that are typical now. Supply and demand.

I love my Samsung I just have high expectations of a imaging sensor foundry if I seem harsh and as nerd 🤓 I like smart ideas with access to market leading tech.
