[Nerd Alert] The SnapDragon 8 Elite - A deeper dive into the SoC

This is a bit of a Nerdy engineer post, and one that might be slightly educational for some.

As I work within design of complex electronics in my day job, I decided to search out some information of the SnapDragon 8 Elite chipset that is currently used in the S25 range of handsets, including the Ultra and recent Edge model.

Before someone asks the question, THIS IS NOT 'AI GENERATED' POST, this is all my own words. I do not use AI for any of my content or research.

The internal Qualcomm number for this chipset is the SM8750. This device is a complex SoC... which is 'System on Chip'. If you consider older technology where individual parts of a system were separate into CPU, memory, GPU graphics, external data buses for peripherals etc. A System Chip includes many of these parts, but all rolled into one single chip..

Therefore the processing, graphics, some internal memory, AI optimisation, cellular modem and RF data transfer, and any other parts are all included in one neat package, known as an SoC. An advantage of this is the large quantities of data and processing that can be handled at super speeds, available internally in transfers. And the footprint size of this very small chip is made with 3nm technology so all these functions are possible on an extremely small footprint.

Within this SM8750 (Snapdragon 8 elite) is included the main processor (Oryon CPU), along with the graphics processor (Adreno GPU) and the AI processor (Hexagon NPU). Between these processors, the data speeds can meet up to nearly 5GHz speed... this is a lot faster than traditional external bus speeds of a traditional system, by many orders of magnitude.

Internal to the Snadragon Elite there is also a cellular modem that includes LTE and 5G supporr, a WiFi modem, and a GNSS (GPS) positioning receiver. All of these functions are internal and also benefit from the efficiencies of being handled at these internal transfer speeds. Other additions include a gaming engine, and photo AI optimisation engine.

So with all this in mind and rolled up into a 'system chip', you can appreciate what an 'engineering marvel' a device like this is. For chipset manufacturers these SoC devices, take many months / years to develop and test.

Perhaps with this little bit of information given here, there is a bit of a basic education to help with the understanding of the design of an SoC, and how very intelligent these chipsets capabilities are !

Credits are given to the open source Qualcomm internet page for this information, and which is provided below.

Like me, if you want to get more details on the Elite SoC it is all here below, including the datasheet and product information.

<A
Nice informative posting. As someone who's followed Computers and CPUs since the early 90s, all of this stuff always interests me. It just amazes me how far we've come from the early days of single core, single digit MHz CPUs in the 80s to mobile chips featuring 8 cores capable of speeds over 500x that... 😂
