Soundbar HW-M550 Volume Freak Out

Hello, I'm new to this online support community, but I've had my HW-M550 Samsung Soundbar for several years. It's worked fine until recently when it began suddenly increasing volume to the maximum on its own. While watching a program, the volume soars up to the maximum level and I am unable to bring it back down at all -- I can only disconnect the soundbar completely to shut it off.

Very frustrating! Any help and all suggestions are much appreciated.

My TV is an older Samsung model from 2012, so it doesn't have the menu settings and functions described by that link. Thanks for trying, though.

I'm still stumped and about to trash this Soundbar for another one!

Is there any benefit to connecting via HDMI cable vs. optical cable? My TV has an insufficient number of HDMI ports, so I've been using the optical cable to connect. I'd have to switch out something else (Blueray player, ROKU, etc.) to use an HDMI port.
