Thought I would start this thread on AI, there is an upcoming Microsoft Event Future Decoded which will explore some of the fields and interesting questions arsing -31 October to 1 November which will be streamed live if interested in any of it More details here https://www.futuredecoded.com/content/live Information from the 2017 event also available https://news.microsoft.com/en-gb/2017/10/31/future-decoded-2017, also short video Decoded 2017 Highlights

I'll also include work Samsung has been doing in this area with some details from the AI forum in September https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-ai-forum-offers-a-roadmap-for-the-future-of-ai https://research.samsung.com/artificial-intelligence

With regard to the latest recent developments would say areas that have most caught my attention are Virtual Agents, Automated Hardware, Optimised Hardware, Biometrics (which can creat emore natural interactions between touch, speech and body reactions) Robotic processes, Digital Twin Modelling, Cyber Defences, Empowering Workers (despite risks in some area of undoubted benefit in medical and legal circles). Undoubtably potential benefits which will assist us all in daily life. some more detail https://blog.adext.com/en/artificial-intelligence-technologies-2018 Much scope with Content Creation (for instance one tool Wibbitz can quickly create content from written documentation). Emotion Recognition is certainly an interesting concept which can have application in the entertainment and business arenas. We are all familiar with voice recognition but continually advancing. Detail of 14 applications, some will be more familiar than others. https://blog.adext.com/en/applications-of-artificial-intelligence

A few of the slides on Azure just to give you a feel of it without going too much into the technical side(not that I know a great deal about it myself) but may be interrested in finding out a bit more. Anyone work with cloud based systems?

Basically Azure allows users to host software in the cloud so that they do not have to buy and manage servers. Advantage is that you only pay for resources your application actually uses. Anyway speaker said impossible to be expert in all aspects, what is important is to know the fundamentals and learn to navigate Microsoft Docs.

Here is an overview of the Day's events, some of highlights were the speech on Tech trends by Microsoft CTO Michael Wignall , AI will soon be so commonplace and empower us, the idea is that we can so creative and not need to do many mundane tasks. Earlier focus on the Microsoft Surface Pen wiith its Time Saving elements and benefits bound to grow in future with variety of technology. Whilst there may be fears of replacement new opportunities will be created, employees may well need to continually retrain. Obviously the benefits in medical research a big feature and great speech by Scientist/Broadcaster, Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock about dreaming big and in many ways using Technology to help others. Interesting to hear Michael Caine on the perspective of the Entertainment industry . https://news.microsoft.com/en-gb/2018/10/31/future-decoded-2018-day-one-live/

Ethiics touched upon which centers around Data/People and consumers need to clear of the purposes for collecting and sharing, transparancy is important. However a consensus not always easy to achieve, survey on ethical decisions regarding Driverless Car Technology got a bit of attention lately. Bit of detail on this here https://www.forbes.com/sites/patricklin/2018/10/29/does-ai-ethics-need-to-be-more-inclusive/#35d98711f319

The Microsoft CEO today focused on the three A's: AI, Azure, Accessibility . Satya Nadella also made a big play on a P word claiming "Privacy Is a Human Right", in today's environment though make of that what you will. A good summary in this article . https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/11/01/satya_nadella_microsoft_future_decoded_keynote/

In terms of services and customer engagement AI will play a much bigger role in the future and imperative that the infrastructure is in place to meet demand. As one example Microsoft working with Wiltshire council to improve efficiency and satisfaction with the use of Digital services and use of Bots, also advising on managing change. https://storageprdv2inwink.blob.core.windows.net/8db60c15-c71b-4512-a6eb-74b389f494bf/a873647b-6db5-4685-9e14-3e862dd6ff8a

At the Samsung Developer's conference opportunities a few chances to win a Smart Watch and would say one of the winners earned it by correctly naming John McCarthy as the inventor of the phrase AI.

John McCarthy is considered to be the architech of AI and coined the phrase in 1958, which he would describe as the science and engineering of making intelligent machines. He also created LISP the standard computing language which would later be used in a variety of internet services such as detecting credit card fraud. McCarthy worked on the very early versions of the self Driving Car which we hear so much about today. Another advanced technique he developed was an early version of networking and his observation that “computation may someday be organized as a public utility can be seen as the concept of "cloud computing" so prevalent today.

See more details here Architech of AI

A few articles I've come across, one somewhat critical of AI and Machine Learning being used interchangeably but it has become the Buzz word encompassing the Advanced Technologies.

https://hbr.org/2018/01/artificial-intelligence-for-the-real-world

https://thenextweb.com/artificial-intelligence/2019/01/25/how-ai-will-change-storytelling-and-become-the-next-great-art-form/

https://thenextweb.com/artificial-intelligence/2019/01/25/how-deepminds-ai-defeated-top-players-at-starcraft-ii/

https://www.wired.co.uk/topic/artificial-intelligence

https://medium.com/datadriveninvestor/differences-between-ai-and-machine-learning-and-why-it-matters-1255b182fc6

A few more interesting articles I thought I would share.

AI has been increasingly used in music but whilst the scale may have changed it is not exactly a new phenomenon, as far back as the 90's David Bowie created an app called the Verbasizer which randomly changed lyrics. It can be a usefull tool to enhance the musuc creating process, though of course there is the danger if machines given too much control of it being overly formulistic. Though throughout the years there has always been a mixure of original and standardised output.

With continuing debate surrounding the ethics, that Google have set up an Advisory Board. However without straying into politics just to say that some of the board members have been contoversial due to past public statements , though in terms of experience and credentials board members appear to of a high standard overall. Board will deal with some of the complicated issues when AI causes concerns and some countries use of it will not be used to benefit the public.

if you are not particularly artistic, Ai generated software from Nvida could be of a great benefit. Whilst not the only one of its kind does seem a bit more advanced, though the technology bound to develop further over time.

Ai could involve trade offs, at one end if the scale less need to do mundane tasks and thus more creative though if it becomes pretty advanced will there be a tendency to think less for ourselves? Good example in terms of apps but different view of where we shall go. In the future shall humans be changed out of recognition and have less conscious thoughts or will we have the best of both worlds with the technology enhancing our being? Some view possibility of being less keen to question certain sources and to an extent that is true today- information society for i nstance can become "disinformation" However important to emphasise the many benefits of technology.

https://www.theverge.com/2018/8/31/17777008/artificial-intelligence-taryn-southern-amper-music

https://www.theverge.com/2019/3/26/18282883/google-ai-principles-advisory-board-ethics-monitor-external-group

https://www.theverge.com/2019/3/19/18272602/ai-art-generation-gan-nvidia-doodle-landscapes

https://www.wired.com/story/ai-powered-apps-more-creative-or-less-human/

https://www.wired.com/story/will-ai-achieve-consciousness-wrong-question/

I've noticed an AI event at the Barbican, London on 15 June, Speakers for instance from the Executive Director Partnership on AI Terah Lyons, Author of The Creativity Code Marcus Du Sautoy and Chief Decision Scientist at Google Cassie Kozyrkov.

https://www.wired.co.uk/partnerships/wired-pulse-ai-barbican/speakers

For those fortunate to attend there would be an opportunity to visit the AI Test Lab and Last AI-More Than Human Tour does sound interesting. https://cnda.condenast.co.uk/wired/WIRED%202019/WIRED%20Pulse%20AI/WIRED-Pulse-AI/agenda/index.html

Anyway should find out more about it later.

An interesting article on how AI is transforming finance:

AI is enhancing services and creating new personalised experinces, whilst also making transactions easier. Bank of America has its own digital assistant Erica which is abled to transfer money and make some other more involved transactions to greatly assist some customers. However there are limitations and some more complicated matters require the human touch.

Voice shopping is another innovation which has been used in varying degrees by companies such as Amazon and Starbucks. In the future you will be able to shop quickly by paying digitally, Amazon has started the move away from cashier shopping with it's Amazon Go stores where the account automatically charged However there were teething problems and not yet on a major scale.

Another area where AI can be utilised is in the field of credit checks, system could go far beyond the traditional method by incorporating digital foot prints as patterns can be found which determine trustworthiness. Singapore start up Lendoo has starting using AI logarithms in this regard. More details below.

https://thenextweb.com/reinvent-the-future-of-finance/2019/05/07/5-ways-ai-is-revolutionizing-how-we-handle-money/

Some information from the Google IO event (though innovation a better term really)

As well as unveiling new handsets -Pixel 3 and Nest Hub Max, Google also trailed advancements in the field of Artificial Intelligence. The Assistant will have a major speed boost -- apparently no longer have to say "Hey Google" due to to onboard algorithmic models. https://www.engadget.com/2019/05/07/hey-google-stop-alarm-no-more/ Duplex is coming to Chrome which is beneficial for such things as Ticket purchases and car hire. https://www.engadget.com/2019/05/07/google-turns-duplex-into-fancy-autofill-for-chrome/ search will soon have AR capabilities, the upcoming Android Q will have more smart features.

Can see some more details here https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/7/18531198/google-io-summary-keynote-news-highlights-recap-2019
