But if a phone is off then it cannot register with any cell phone tower.

If your handset cannot register with a cell phone tower then the phone cannot 'ping' with the network, and it does not know it is there.

If the network does not know it is there then it is impossible to trilaterate a position for your phone.

And if you cant calculate a position for your phone then this is simply just not possible.

If you believe you have a way to overcome this simple engineering theory then feel free to discuss on here. This will only be a discussion though... we are mostly just customers. However I am an engineer with a speciality in GPS navigation and have a background in mobile networks and communication. So I do have some engineering expertise.

Smiley

Maybe they can install some kind of sensor that doesn't turn off but I am pretty sure that's illegal.

Trilaterate is the method of positioning... typically with GPS. The distance of three known points is measured and the intersection point of these distances is the user location.

Distance from cellphone towers uses a similar process.

https://www.google.com/search?q=trilateration+vs+triangulation+cellphone+positioning&sca_esv=fe7632689ec76c6d&sxsrf=ANbL-n5DYoVquZD1P4_Kv9du0CxRh5Tlpw%3A1768049231535&ei=T0piaYWzIK_NhbIPhbey8Qw&oq=trilateration+vs+triangulation+cellphone+positioning&gs_lp=EhNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwIjR0cmlsYXRlcmF0aW9uIHZzIHRyaWFuZ3VsYXRpb24gY2VsbHBob25lIHBvc2l0aW9uaW5nMgUQIRigATIFECEYoAEyCBAAGIAEGKIEMggQABiABBiiBDIFEAAY7wUyCBAAGIAEGKIEMggQABiABBiiBEiyOVDlB1iqNnACeAGQAQCYAZgBoAGPFaoBBDMuMjC4AQPIAQD4AQGYAhmgAuEVwgIKEAAYsAMY1gQYR8ICDRAAGIAEGLADGEMYigXCAgUQABiABMICBhAAGBYYHsICCxAAGIAEGIYDGIoFwgIHECEYoAEYCsICBBAhGAqYAwCIBgGQBguSBwQ1LjIwoAfsdbIHBDMuMjC4B9QVwgcIMC4xNS44LjLIB0uACAA&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp

Smiley

A phone that is fully off cannot connect to towers, so it cannot be tracked. Samsung’s SmartThings Find can locate offline phones using nearby Galaxy devices. Your idea would need hardware changes and is not supported. Enable offline finding before a phone is lost.
