Simply put, iPhones usually hold their value better because they're seen as more premium and Apple doesn't release new models as often as Samsung. Plus, iPhones traditionally got software updates for a lot longer, though Samsung has really stepped up their game there lately.

That's what I've learned so far. Your thoughts???

Software support with Samsung has improved lots providing longer usability updates. Apple do often cost more to start which isn't a good thing. This may explain this.

Apple gets a little more value as they don't gatekeep as many software features with new versions often and can raise larger awareness of them by OS updates being released to all devices at once.

Sheer volume of Samsung devices out there hitting the second hand market.

For example, Samsung have produced around 37 million S25 devices. Look how many older devices have been traded in to buy them.

Samsung also offer through the year a lot of promotions. When do you ever see apple drop their prices ? ... even for a black friday or a promotion.

The best you ever see from Apple is some £50 off an £1100 device. Even for the earlier generation models they often have a high price.

I believe as Apple rarely discount... that they hold up in value for longer.

For samsung, even on release day, with various codes, freebies and employee portal discounts... it is possible to trade in and get the new £1800 device for less than £1k.

Would you say that's because Samsung users upgrade more often?

I think non techie people only do every 3 years or so nowadays. I had one iPhone for nearly 5 years. Most phones have been very capable for the last 5/6 years now so updates have become more iterative.

Obviously it filters down to wearables and other parts.

Free buds promo... means the reseller sites are influx with unwanted buds. Same when there is a galaxy watch freebie offer. With s25u the duo charger and free cases were giveaway prices on ebay.

Often with most new phone releases these freebies are also part of the package. Free storage upgrades often mean that the less popular smaller storage phone is worth more in the trade in structure... purely as there are more available 512GB than 256GB.

All the time samsung are likely driving down prices in their second hand market by doing these promos.

Absolutely. It is not a complaint. If anyone wants to buy some Buds 3 pro right now... just wait for a month. A new pair will be available on ebay for around £100 or so from start of August !

I would but I can't really warrant spending that much to upgrade that often.

Interesting the remarks at the S24U cameras. I've played with S23U (10x 🔥) and 200mp ExpertRaw on S25U. Yes they have their benefits but I've not found my S24U camera completely incapable at all.

In terms of cost, that's the thing. Upgrade offers have been really strong (if you want everything they throw in).

This year I spent less than £200 to upgrade and still got a set of Buds 3 thrown in

Samsung phone have no resale value because they're discounted so heavily when new. Why pay £500 for a used S25 when you can get a new one for that. iPhones are never discounted, so retain their value.

Simple economics.
