(OneUI 7) Why are notifications so big now?

I've managed to switch the drop down panel back to normal (choosing Panel Settings and Together) but I absolutely hate how the notifications look now. Not only are they horrible to look at, they're about 3 times the height that they were before. If I'm using my phone in landscape mode and I want to "peek" at notifications, I can't do that any more.

I don't understand why these sorts of changes are being made without a clear way to revert or customise them. I've had a look around but it all seems to point back to the issue with the split drop down panels. I started to use Android because it's possible to customise it, unlike iOS - so I'm not exactly pleased about changes like this!

Can you describe how you fixed the dropdown panel in more detail as I can't fix it and any help would be really appreciated? X

Pull down the side that shows the shortcuts, pull it down again until the pencil shows at the top. Click that then click Panel Settings at the top left. Then you can choose Together instead of Separate.
