Google assistant requires phone unlock before sending message or whatsapp

Everything is up to date and I believe I have all the permissions in place for google assistant but the phone still insists on being unlocked before allowing me to dictate a message.

Strangely it doesn't do this for phone calls.

I am able to send a voice message via WhatsApp, without requiring to unlock the screen. For WhatsApp calling, it does asks me to unlock the phone.

The link shared by @GoanGeek mentions that Google Assistant cannot open apps from the lockscreen. WhatsApp calling requires the app to be opened. This could possibly be the reason for asking to unlock before making a WhatsApp call .

Frustratingly it won't even let me send a message, never mind a call.

OK, may be a disclaimer.. I have WhatsApp beta. So not sure, if that makes any difference (new functionality)?
