Poor Video call quality - S23 Ultra

The Samsung galaxy s23 Ultra has the worst video call quality, even worse then the lowest budget phones out there.

Have tested on apps such as WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, Instagram and Snapchat, and have faced the same very poor video quality on all of these. My internet connection is excellent and super fast as I'm using fiber, have also tested using mobile data and still the same issue.

I tried to join the One UI 6.0 beta program to see if it had any fix for this issue but even there, the problem persists. I rolled back to One UI 5.1, reset the device using SmartSwitch and still it's the same problem.

I have read on this platform that other s23 ultra users are also experiencing this same issue so I'm relieved that I'm not alone.

The normal camera works fine and the issue occurs when using social media or VOIP apps.

Samsung, kindly fix this issue ASAP please as this is unacceptable that your flagship device cannot even make decent video calls.

If you go into the support section on the Samsung Members App and leave feedback in there for developers to see
They won't monitor this here
Do you have a screen protector on?
If it covers the selfie camera, this can affect results.
I trust you have gone through app settings to make sure it's set for higher quality settings if the apps in question allow this.
Got to admit that I don't use the Sefie camera very often. But not noticed any problem. Just to try I did a WhatsApp video call and the recipient said the quality looked ok
Also worth checking if your network provider has a fast enough streaming service. I know some are slower than others

Hi, I have sent feedback hopefully they can fix it soon. I do have a screen protector but it doesn't cover the front camera. The normal camera result is fine, it's just when doing videocalls on any app in my case be it WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram etc. I have seen other posts here where members are facing the same issue and I'm confused if it is affecting only some s23 ultra devices as you mentioned that you did test on WhatsApp and it is fine in your case.

Hi could try this and see if it helps....

Open your camera

Go to video selfie mode

And try changing the resolution to higher.

I can't guarantee turning this to higher resolution will affect the video on the other apps but maybe give it a try and see.

Hi, it is already set to UHD 60, the maximum resolution.
I tried calling different people and all are saying my video quality is bad, changed sim as well, connected to my home wifi and friends as well and still the same problem. I have also removed my screen protector just to make sure but still and now im regretting.

Normal camera works fine, slefies and videos are crisp and sharp.

Have you thought that this may not be a problem samsung can fix but could be a general problem that these apps have on android systems ?, if your comparing it to say apple phone or a Google phone where they make the phones and the software they are optimizer for those phones so they can get much better quality from WhatsApp etc, it's not always a clear cut as blaming samsung for these problems when the likes of WhatsApp etc have to work on multiple of different phones within the andriod market

Apparently it's due to the low light improver thing the camera has and it causes video calls to be poor quality

I know this thread is a bit old but wanted to clarify the issue with my own S23 ultra experience. Like everyone else, the normal camera functions work fine, but is messed up in all 3rd party apps I have tried. The issue does not appear to be poor picture quality or resolution issues, there seems to be some kind of face tracking going on. If I tilt the camera to the side a little bit, it will try to center my face by zooming in closer and closer. If I move out of frame completely, it will zoom back out looking for me. So it's not just a zoom issue either.

I did try turning off Tracking Auto-Focus in the camera settings, but as suspected, it does not fix the 3rd party apps at all. Very few, if any, of the 3rd party apps have settings like this you can modify. Not sure why this seems to be the default and not sure why you cannot turn this tracking off for 3rd party apps.

I am also facing the same issue even in year 2024. It is kind of irritating. If anyone find any solution please let me know.
