Same smartphone for 7 years.

I got samsung a52s 5g I don't want to buy a new mobile handset, until I can get a pay monthly handset plan. Is this OK if not why and what are the risks?,,????

Hi @DanielWestbrook Yes will be fine as long as you are happy with the A52 5G and it is running well. (possibly an error in the Title). It is one of the best mid range devices and generally good value for some of the impressive features. Your Device will be fine for a little while yet. However generally I would not recommend using a Smart phone as primary Device for that long due to security risks. your Device got 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security updates . Many more modern devices are now eligible for 4 cycles of OS updates and 5 cycles of security updates.

However to an extent it depends on your use age, risk a bit less if you do not go outwith the Galaxy and Play Stores.

Google tends to support at least the last three versions of Android. However some apps may run into incompatibility issues.

Just to piggyback onto what @JAMES4578 has shared, @DanielWestbrook, it is difficult to say with absolute certainty whether any phone would be good for seven years.

Your A52s is very capable and comes with three years of Android OS upgrades, and four years of security updates. You have that reassurance.

However, it does depend on your use case and how you use your phone. If you, for instance, intended to retain your phone for another five years, you will need to keep it in optimal condition:

I just point this out for balance, of course. Additionally, you'd likely need to pay to have your battery replaced after a number of years. Most standard apps tend to be compatible with phones and tablets over a number of years. However, if an app developer introduces a particularly cutting-edge feature down the line, it is feasible that the app (or game) will not run optimally on your phone.

Just for completeness, if you're keeping your phone for a long period of time, it's likely you'll have amassed a lot of data (and memories!), so it's always worthwhile ensuring that you regularly back up your important files:

It might be worth taking a "wait and see" approach. It's definitely not unprecedented to keep a phone for a few years or even longer (if you can resist the temptation of the array of amazing releases within that timeframe!), so you could just see how you get on year-on-year.

@PaulM1 @DanielWestbrook yes optimisation/backing up is important on any device but more so with older models. I would also advise that it is best to clear the cache partition periodically and is advisable after updates. Follow these steps:

1. Turn off the device.
2. Connect To Computer or plug in USB-C Headphones , Press and hold the Volume Up key and then press and hold the Power key
3. When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
4. Wait until the Android system recovery menu options appear.
5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
6. Press Power key to select.
7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

There may be occasions when it is necessary to Factory Reset but should be the last resort and it is essential to take a Back up before doing so.
